Eric Holder on Thursday became the first US attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress. The story of how race became entwined in the debate over the Fast and Furious gun-running scandal?is a parable of the Obama presidency.

As Eric Holder became on Thursday the first US attorney general ever to be cited for contempt of Congress, House members faced the possibility that their investigation of a botched federal gun-trafficking sting could become a racial flashpoint.
Black leaders have rallied around Attorney General Holder, and the Congressional Black Caucus walked out Thursday when the entire House voted 255 to 67 to pass a recommendation by the Oversight Committee to hold Holder in contempt, which could lay the groundwork for a criminal investigation.
Already, Holder had brought race into the debate over the Fast and Furious gun-running scandal. The?House Oversight Committee's?investigation was a way for Republicans to get at the president in part because "we're both African-American," he told The New York Times last year.?
And Holder has pushed the envelope on race before, for example calling America ?essentially a nation of cowards? for failing to debate race openly.
Now, the moves in Congress Thursday raise the specter of charges of a racial conspiracy by white Republicans against a black administration.
Some leaders, like the Rev. Al Sharpton, suggested that Republicans had ?stopped and frisked? Holder to make an ?example? out of a black man. House minority leader Nancy Pelosi opined the contempt vote is retribution for Holder?s opposition to new voter ID laws that are seen as targeting minority voters in former Confederate states. MSNBC host Chris Matthews questioned whether the rancor of the contempt vote has an ?ethnic? root.
The political showdown showcases a pattern that has emerged during the Obama presidency: supporters claim the opposition is racist, and critics dismiss the reaction as a knee-jerk casting of the ?race card.? But its real root, say some political analysts, is more in politics than race. ?
?The issue of how Obama and secondarily Eric Holder have been treated, and whether race plays into it, is not crazy in the sense that a lot of the early public demonstrations had racial tinges to them, and the fact that 15 percent of whites in Mississippi voted for Obama,? says Cal Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. ?But even though the Republicans have stated that their chief goal is to see that Obama is a one-term president, what we?re seeing [with Fast and Furious] is not racial politics, it?s partisan politics.?
After a 16-month investigation, the House Oversight Committee says Holder is refusing to hand over 1,500 pages of documentation that it needs to figure out who knew about the program, and when. Holder has said making those communiqu?s public could put US agents at risk and cases in jeopardy, and President Obama stepped in to block the release of the documents by invoking executive privilege. A separate inspector general investigation into Fast and Furious is ongoing.
To collect the news is very important now. We cannot live without getting update of the current news. The world is so little to us that the countries opposite to our globe are near to us like the neighboring families. So, we are so conscious about getting the news of all countries. We do not feel easy if we do not get the news of the other countries. Here media play an important role for delivering the new worldwide. In the previous days, we do not get news of the other world so easily. We do not get the news of own country also. All the impossible has been made possible by the grace of current media. That is the reason; to get international current news is not so hard to us.
The news might be anything about games and sports, political, economical, social, and cultural or any kind of disaster, the news of weather forecast etc.
We are now able to get the current news internationally as well as the news of our locale sitting in the arm chair in the house. The work has done made easy by the help of current electronic media such as TV, radio, internet websites, mobile phones, news papers etc. We are now able to get international current news as soon as the journalist reached the place of the event. The thing has gone a step ahead by the help of satellite camera. We can get the image of the event of the place where no man can reach just like a huge ignition, large fighting, hidden places of antisocial in a jungle etc. So, the current media is helping us a lot.
Newspaper also is a most popular and important media of getting international current news. But one problem is that it delivers the news of the previous day.
Otherwise, all over the world, news paper is a must media to all. Radio is also a great medium of getting the current news worldwide. Internet website also has been playing an important role in delivering the current news of the world. Now the world is so small to us that now any country in the world can continue the monopoly over the world. All kinds of news have been delivered by all media. So, to collect international current news is so easy today. Be connected with any of the medium you will get all current news happening worldwide.
NATO signs deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan to truck its military supplies from Afghan war out through Central Asia, giving it options instead of closed Pakistan route.

NATO may not know the final result of its intervention in Afghanistan, but it now has an exit plan. And the exit will take place through Central Asia, the same route the Soviet troops took after their withdrawal in 1988 and 1989.
As relations worsen between the United States and Pakistan, NATO has signed deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan (see map here) to move out the tons of equipment that must be withdrawn by 2014, when NATO makes its final exit from Afghanistan.
Speaking with Agence France-Presse news agency, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that NATO now considers Central Asia and its Russian-built roads to be the most expedient route out of Afghanistan. ?
"These agreements will give us a range of new options and the robust and flexible transport network we need," Mr. Rasmussen said.
Tarnished by more than a decade of war, mutual recriminations, and foreign policy goals that are increasingly at odds, the US-Pakistani relationship now has reached a nadir. From the early post 9/11 days, when NATO received 90 percent of its supplies for the Afghan war through the Pakistani port of Karachi, now Pakistan has cut off NATO?s old supply routes. Last November, Pakistan banned NATO?s use of Pakistani territory after NATO planes mistakenly bombed a Pakistani post, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers.
For Pakistan, the NATO bombing was the last straw, following the violation of its territorial sovereignty last year when US Navy SEALs captured and killed Osama bin Laden in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.
Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) or petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) are one of the most widespread soil contaminants in Canada, the United States and many other countries worldwide. Clean-up of PHC-contaminated soils costs the Canadian economy hundreds of millions of dollars annually. In Canada, most PHC contaminated site evaluations are based on the methods developed by the Canadian Council of the Ministers of the Environment (CCME). However, the CCME method does not differentiate PHCs from BOCs (the naturally occurring biogenic organic compounds), which are co-extracted with petroleum hydrocarbons in soil samples. Consequently, this could lead to overestimation of PHC levels in soil samples. In some cases, biogenic interferences can even exceed regulatory levels (300 ?g/g for coarse soils and 1300 ?g/g for fine soils for Fraction 3, C16-C34 range, in the CCME Soil Quality Level). Resulting false exceedances can trigger unnecessary and costly cleanup or remediation measures. Therefore, it is critically important to develop new protocols to characterize and quantitatively differentiate PHCs and BOCs in contaminated soils. The ultimate objective of this PERD (Program of Energy Research and Development) project is to correct the misconception that all detectable hydrocarbons should be regulated as toxic petroleum hydrocarbons. This can only be accomplished through improvements to the existing CCME PHC determination protocols and soil quality guidelines. During 2009-2010, soil and plant samples were collected from over forty oil-contaminated and paired background sites in various provinces. These samples were extracted by the ALS Laboratory and analyzed in the ESTS Oil Research Laboratory. The silica gel column cleanup procedure was applied to effectively remove all target BOCs from the oil-contaminated sample extracts. Furthermore, a reliable GC-MS method in combination with the derivatization technique, developed in this laboratory, was used for identification and characterization of various biogenic sterols and other major biogenic compounds in these oil contaminated samples. Both PHCs and BOCs in these samples were quantitatively determined. This paper reports the characterization results of this set of 21 samples. In general, the presence of petroleum-characteristic alkylated PAH homologues and biomarkers can be used as unambiguous indicators of the contamination of oil and petroleum product hydrocarbons; while the absence of petroleum-characteristic alkylated PAH homologues and biomarkers and the presence of abundant BOC compounds can be used as unambiguous indicators of the predominance of natural organic compounds in soil samples.

DIY is an excellent way to save money as it enables people to carry out jobs without having to pay someone else to do them. Before anyone undertakes any kind of DIY project, they should first check if they can really afford to do it.
DIY can save on expense, but any project has to be budgeted. There is nothing worse than starting a project then running out of cash before it has been completed.
The best way to complete a project and remain within the budget is to source the materials and tools as cheaply as possible. It is important to remember that quality should never be sacrificed due to cost.
Before buying anything, it is important to check whether any of the tools and materials are already to hand. If purchases have to be made, it is then a case of finding where they can be bought at an affordable price.
Many of the big DIY stores offer good deals. Another option is to shop online. If items have to be ordered, the cost of delivery should be factored into the budget.
Home improvement doesn?t have to mean a complete overhaul of your home. While you can replace tile, carpet and repaint, you can also do simpler fixes. Buying some new air fresheners, wall art or plants can also liven your home. Read this article for more tips on easy home improvement.
Increase your productivity when installing new kitchen cabinets by planning the order in which you will hang them. Install the top cabinets first so you do not have to lean over the base cabinets to attach them to the wall. Beginning in a corner is the easiest way to avoid fitting problems.
Cover all of your home?s surfaces to keep them safe from harm when do home improvements. When painting then use a tarp to cover the floor, if you?re demolishing walls or cabinets then cover any finished surface so that there is no scratching or other damage occurs. Also cover any walls that you aren?t going to repaint.
Seek out advice before starting on do it yourself projects. There may be important steps you will overlook if you don?t know what you are doing. Although many household jobs can be done yourself, it is always a good idea to ask an expert how to do the job properly.
Perpetually closed doors can make a hallway or corridor appear uninviting and uncomfortably narrow. Replace your solid door with a French door, which has a series of clear glass panels framed by wood. If you are concerned with privacy, opt for translucent glass or an adhesive to give the glass a ?frosted? look. Home Depot and Lowe?s carry adhesive window films for under twenty dollars.
If you own a home then you know the list of improvements and updates are never-ending. Every season brings new things to think about around your house. For the summer months, you should always check and clean your air conditioner; likewise, for winter you should do the same check and balance for your heater.
Upgrade your thermostat to a programmable model designed to regulate temperature based on occupancy to make a comfortable improvement to your home. These easy to install thermometers allow you to set the temperature differently throughout the day based on preference and occupancy. For example, you can reduce the heat during the day when the home is empty or outside temperatures increase.
When looking for materials and ideas for your home improvement project, take a look at the home improvement catalogs and magazines. They offer many great ideas and looks for projects throughout the home and offer suggestions on who supplies the materials to complete the project. They are great resources for color schemes and decor too.
Pick a color scheme from an existing item in your room. Whether it?s the upholstery fabric, the drapes, or a rug, look at the colors that you already have, and then base your color scheme around that. For example, if you have a rug featuring green, red and yellow shades, choose a dominant color out of the three that should be used in 60% of the room. The other two shades should be secondary and used as accent colors.
As stated before in the introduction, many people think home improvement is impossible. People try all the time to improve their homes, but often fail. Even with these failures, home improvement is not as difficult as most people think. All you have to do is remember the home improvement tips in this article to make it easier.

Progress in quest to reduce use of radiation in treatment of pediatric Hodgkin lymphomaPublic release date: 26-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Summer Freeman summer.freeman@stjude.org 901-595-3061 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
Trial led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital investigators succeeds in keeping cure rates high for young patients with favorable-risk Hodgkin lymphoma while reducing their chances of serious treatment side effects
A multicenter trial showed that nearly half of young patients with early-stage Hodgkin lymphoma can be cured without undergoing either irradiation or intensive chemotherapy that would leave them at risk for second cancers, infertility, heart and other problems later.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital investigators led this multi-institution study, which focused on pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma patients without widespread disease or symptoms such as weight loss, fever and night sweats. The findings will likely spur efforts to identify patients with even more advanced disease whose cancer could be effectively treated with less irradiation.
"This study adds to evidence that it is possible to omit radiation even in patients treated with a less intense chemotherapy regimen and still achieve excellent long-term survival," said Monika Metzger, M.D., an associate member of the St. Jude Department of Oncology. She is the first and corresponding author of the research, which is published in the June 27 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
"These results will help push efforts to further adapt therapies based on a patient's disease risk factors and early response to treatment with the goal of eliminating radiation for as many patients as possible," she said. Metzger said the findings point to the possibility that elderly Hodgkin patients with similarly limited disease and who are less able to tolerate intensive chemotherapy may also be candidates for the minimal treatment approach used in this study.
For decades, radiation has been a staple of Hodgkin lymphoma treatment in children and adults. In children, radiation and chemotherapy have helped push long-term survival rates for patients with favorable-risk disease to better than 90 percent. But radiation leaves patients vulnerable to second cancers and other serious problems later. By the 1990s, work was underway in earnest to identify patients who could be cured without radiation.
Hodgkin is found in 850 to 900 children and adolescents each year and accounts for an estimated 6 percent of all childhood cancers. The disease strikes the lymph system, which includes the lymph nodes, tonsils and other immune system components.
This study involved 88 patients whose cancer had spread to less than three lymph node groups and surrounding tissue. None of the patients reported fever, weight loss or other symptoms also associated with a worse outcome. About one-third of young Hodgkin lymphoma patients fall into this favorable risk category. The patients were treated between March 2000, and December 2008, at St. Jude; Stanford University Medical Center; Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital, both in Boston; and Maine Medical Center, in Portland. One patient withdrew early and was not included in the results.
The patients all received four rounds of chemotherapy with the drugs vinblastine, Adriamycin, methotrexate and prednisone, a combination known as VAMP. Unlike some other chemotherapy agents used to treat Hodgkin lymphoma, none of these drugs is linked to second cancers or infertility. One, Adriamycin, belongs to a family of drugs that can lead to heart damage, but at much higher cumulative doses.
Radiation was recommended for patients whose tumors had not shrunk at least 75 percent following two rounds of chemotherapy. Those patients received low-dose irradiation of 25.5 grays to the tumor and surrounding tissue.
For patients with a favorable initial response to chemotherapy, omitting radiation had no impact on their survival either two years or five years after their diagnosis. Those patients fared no worse than patients who received radiation therapy after the opening rounds of chemotherapy resulted in only a partial response. All patients followed for at least five years were still alive regardless of their initial treatment.
More than 88 percent of the five-year survivors were cancer-free. Patients in both treatment groups were equally likely to enjoy that status.
Cancer returned in 11 patients, including five not initially treated with radiation. The recurrence was successfully treated with chemotherapy and low-dose irradiation. Four patients who received irradiation during their treatment received high-dose chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants when their cancer returned. One patient was successfully treated with a more intensive chemotherapy and radiation combination than the one that initially worked, but that patient did not undergo a bone marrow transplant. Another patient relapsed with a form of lymphoma known as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Despite treatment, that patient later died of the disease.
Metzger said the findings suggest that for a subgroup of Hodgkin lymphoma patients this therapeutic regimen may not be appropriate. These are patients with nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin. Of the five patients in the chemotherapy-only group who relapsed, four had this subtype.

Progress in quest to reduce use of radiation in treatment of pediatric Hodgkin lymphomaPublic release date: 26-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

The simple answer to this is yes.? Goldfish, Carassius auratus auratus,?and their fancy varieties all share the same common ancestry.? Around 1600 years ago when carp were farmed in China, the fish farmers noticed some fish developed gold colouration.? These were then intensly bred to what we have as the common goldfish.? Breeders then?developed different strains of fancy finnage and colourations.
???
???? ? It was?commonly thought that the Crucian Carp, Carassius carassius, was the ancester.? However, recent research has identified that the common ancester is most likely to be the Prussian Carp, Carassius gibelio.
Though within the aquarium, I would regard the common goldfish and the fancy relatives as two different pets.? The common goldfish is commonly known to be a hardy and easy pet to keep (along with the owner responsibily managing the water quality).? However, the fancier versions due to delicate finnage and out of proportion body shapes makes them a much more difficult and fragile?pet to keep.? As with all fish, make sure you have researched them before purchasing.

Do you often spend too much at the grocery store? To save money and calories, make a shopping list and stick to it. Make a weekly menu and write up a list of what you will need for the week. Buy only what you need and resist the temptation to buy impulsively. And if you really want to save, leave the kids at home!
Try to put together a swap. A swap is an opportunity for people to get together and trade old products and apparel. An item that you never use can be swapped for something that you need. In some places, people even trade off services. You will be amazed at what you can acquire for nothing more than an unused product!
Signing up for online bill payments can save you money in more than one way. First, it eliminates the expense of envelopes and postage. It also benefits you by helping to avoid exorbitant charges and fees for skipping payments or forgetting to make your payment before the deadline. Most banks offer this service for free or for a nominal fee.
A good personal-finance tip is to look through youtube videos when you?re facing some home-improvement issues. A lot of things can be fixed by taking care of it yourself, contrary to calling in a plumber or repairman. There are plenty of helpful videos on youtube that you can watch.
Purchasing clothing at a consignment store or thrift store instead of a department store can save you a lot of money. Many people are under the assumption that there is something wrong with clothing from these stores; that is simply not the case. Most of these items are brand new or gently used.
Get help from a financial adviser if you need to, but make sure you hire someone you can trust. Do a background search and look at the Better Business Bureau to see if anyone complained about this adviser. You should choose a financial adviser with a good reputation and affordable rates.
Work on paying off credit card debt. Taking out a card to buy something involves using money. It?s not just a plastic card with unlimited funds. When those bills and fees pile up, they take a toll on a person?s credit history. That is why it?s so important to pay them off as much and as quickly as possible.
When making plans for the future, always think about inflation. The money you are putting aside now, might not be worth as much as you think in thirty years. Select a good retirement plan with high interest rates, in order to compensate for inflation and you will end up saving more money than what you will need.
Find a financial mentor. This person can be a relative, a co-worker or your boss. Find someone that you can look up to who handles money the way you would like to. Try to find out how that person perceives money and what kinds of expenditures he or she makes. This can help give you new ideas for yourself.
In order to save a lot of money, try to make more meals at home and avoid eating out. Eating out at restaurants on a regular basis can really cost you a lot of money in the long run. Purchasing food and making it at home is usually a much cheaper option.
If you have extra money, save it. Don?t go out and splurge on junk food, fast food, or unneeded entertainment. Instead, put it in the bank, or somewhere safe. This way, if something comes up, you?ll have the money when you need it. Better yet, use it to pay off any debts you might have.
Instead of going out to the movies with the person that you love, stay in and watch a film that is on television. A night out at the movies for the two of you would cost around 40-50 dollars, and you can have the same great experience for free, right in your own home.
Get into do-it-yourself projects. There are so many ways that you can save money, when you learn to do things, like repair and hem your own clothing, hang your own wallpaper and mow your own lawn. There?s a YouTube video on how to do just about anything. Consider this the next time you have a home repair or other project that you would normally pay someone else to do.

A sculpture that shows computer pioneer Alan Turing looking down at the Enigma Machine was created from stacked slate by British artist Stephen Kettle.
By Alan Boyle
The June 23 centennial of Alan Turing's birth is providing an opportunity to look back at the brilliant life and tragic end of a pioneer in computer science ? a Briton who was instrumental in cracking Germany's Enigma code and turning the tide of World War II, but who killed himself after his humiliation by a society that saw homosexuality as a crime.
Turing came up with the concept of a "universal machine" back in 1936, setting the stage for the quest to create artificial intelligence. It's a quest that's as old as Ovid's Metamorphoses and as new as IBM's Watson. His vision of a computer so knowledgeable and adept in the ways of society that humans would think it was human, too, led to the establishment of the "Turing Test" as a classic gauge of machine intelligence. (Some argue that a program called Cleverbot passed the Turing Test last year.)
His greatest contribution came during the war, when he designed an electromechanical device known as the "bombe." With additional refinements, the cabinet-sized machine at Britain's Bletchley Park could decode thousands of intercepted German messages, tipping off the allies about the Nazis' next moves.
The intelligence gleaned by the Bletchley Park team, code-named Ultra, was crucial to the Allied war effort. "It was thanks to Ultra that we won the war," British Prime Minister Winston Churchill told King George VI.
Gay hero? Or just plain hero? The postwar era, however, was a disaster for Turing, who was gay. He got into a messy relationship with a man who helped an accomplice break into Turing's house?? and after Turing reported the burglary, the investigation of the break-in eventually turned into an investigation of the researcher's sexual behavior.
At that time, in 1952, homosexual behavior fell under a criminal category known as gross indecency, and Turing's conviction could have put him in prison. As an alternative, Turing chose chemical castration through hormone injections. His security clearance was revoked, and he was barred from working for the British government. Turing pressed for a change in Britain's laws, but homosexuality remained a criminal offense in Britain until 1967.
That was way too late for Turing. Two years after his conviction, he died in his laboratory after eating a poisoned apple.
In 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a posthumous apology to Turing, saying that the computer pioneer "truly was one of those individuals we can point to whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war."
"The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely," Brown said. "We're sorry. You deserved so much better."
A video produced in conjunction with the Science Museum's "Codebreaker" exhibit in London explores the life and work of Alan Turing.
Today, Turing is hailed in some quarters as a tragic gay hero. But during this centennial year, the spotlight is squarely on science rather than sex. Google executive Vinton Cerf, who's considered one of the creators of the Internet, said in a BBC retrospective that he hoped this year's exhibits and observances would "help make Turing a hero and household name beyond the technical community that reveres his memory."
Texts on Turing Cerf's tribute is one of seven essays on Turing's life and legacy being posted to the BBC's website this week. Wired's British website is also presenting a rich variety of perspectives to celebrate Turing Week. This weekend, luminaries from around the world will gather at the University of Manchester for a Turing centenary conference. Video from the conference is due to be streamed live. It's all part of Alan Turing Year.
To read up on Turing and his times, you can start with Andrew Hodges' 1983 biography, "Alan Turing: The Enigma," which has been reissued in a centenary edition. (In addition to the book, Hodges maintains a biographical website at Turing.org.uk.) There's also a centenary edition of "Alan M. Turing," the biography written in 1959 by Sara Turing, Alan's mother. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a more recent biography of the great man, written by David Leavitt in 2006.
Charles Petzold's "The Annotated Turing" delves into Alan Turing's groundbreaking 1936 paper, while Princeton University Press is putting out "Alan Turing's Systems of Logic: The Princeton Thesis," a facsimile edition of Turing's Ph.D. thesis. There's also "The Essential Turing," a compilation of the researcher's best-known writings. And if you're looking for something fresh that puts Turing's achievements in a wider context, check out George Dyson's book, "Turing's Cathedral: The Origins of the Digital Universe."
