I write a lot about edgy, semi-dangerous scientific projects. So, I get a lot of suggestions from people who want to share their own ideas for risky home projects. I like the reader engagement, but four times out of five, the ideas are dumb, and borderline deadly. Listen to me: if it involves a pipe, match heads, and gasoline, I guarantee you, it's a bad idea. FORT WORTH ? The classical music world is reeling?from news that renowned pianist Van Cliburn has advanced bone cancer.?Jon Nakamatsu, gold medal winner of the Van Cliburn piano competition in 1997, says?the announcement came as a shock.

"The competition changed my life overnight," Nakamatsu said from New York City. "I went from being a high school German teacher who was moonlighting as a pianist to traveling all year and touring without a break."

The Cliburn Foundation called him Monday with the sad news.

"I think everybody is just devastated in the same way," he said.?"He has touched so many lives all over the world."

Nakamatsu's life was touched early by Cliburn's music.

"Really, the first professional pianist I ever saw as a professional when I was 9 years old," he said.? "Got his autograph. He knelt down backstage and signed, and talked to me. From that day on, it was worship. Kind of an idol worship."

He says news of Cliburn's condition is reverberating through concert halls around the world, just as the 6' 4" Texan shook the world in 1958 by winning the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War.??

Cliburn's publicist says the pianist remains in good spirits at his Fort Worth home.

Turn Any Laptop Into a Money-Saving Wi-Fi Hotspot For Your Hotel Room [Clever Uses]

Turn Any Laptop Into a Money-Saving Wi-Fi Hotspot For Your Hotel Room

These days, everyone travels with two or more internet-connected devices (e.g., your laptop and your phone), but many hotels still require you to pay exorbitant daily charges for each connection. Luckily, you can rectify this injustice by using your laptop as a turnkey wireless access point.

I've been traveling a lot recently, and I quickly got sick of paying an extra $15 per day to get my iPad or phone online. Luckily, as long as your room comes with an ethernet port, you should be able to use your laptop's wireless card to beam, rather than receive, an internet signal. This trick works like a charm, is incredibly simple to set up, and even saved me a few hundred dollars over the course of a few trips. To get you started, we've previously covered how to use your laptop as a wireless hotspot on Windows and OS X.

To get up and running, plug your laptop into the hotel-provided ethernet port and follow whatever steps your hotel requires to get online. Then follow the above-linked instructions to set up internet sharing, and don't forget to create a WPA key. In no time, you'll have a private Wi-Fi hotspot for all of your phones, tablets, and family members' laptops, all for the price of one connection.

Report: Apple to release 7.85-inch iPad in October

6 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air? We don't really know what Apple will call the smaller version of its popular tablet, but we've got a pile of reports from anonymous sources to suggest that the device is actually coming. The latest of these reports claims that the shiny new iPad will be a 7.85-inch gadget.

Bloomberg's Tim Culpan writes that four people familiar with Apple's plans listed out the companies which may supply parts for the device and in the process revealed its diagonal?measurement.

The detail fits with what we've heard before, that the smaller iPad will be close to eight inches diagonally (rather than 9.7 inches like the current models).?

Leaked parts have also?suggested?that the device will use a 19-pin connector like the next-generation iPhone and be offered in a choice of black or white.?Both 9to5?Mac's Seth Weintraub and Apple watcher?John Gruber?agree that chances are high that this smaller tablet will look a lot like a large iPod Touch, with?a smaller bezel.

Of course, the folks at?Apple certainly haven't given any official word regarding the existence of a smaller iPad. ?(It's their policy not to address such rumors, after all.)?So, for now just pick your favorite bit of gossip and let's keep speculating until the cows come home ? or until the Apple executives come to the Moscone Center for an?announcement.

August 31, 2012 at 6:00 AM by Gant Team ? ?

HARRISBURG ? As the official kickoff for Pennsylvania International Week approaches, the Corbett Administration recently reported record export sales for Pennsylvania companies assisted by the state?s export promotion program.

?Gov. Corbett?s commitment to international business development initiatives is leading to new job growth in Pennsylvania,? said Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary C. Alan Walker. ?This past year alone, our programs helped to facilitate more than $831 million of new export sales that resulted in the creation of nearly 6,900 new Pennsylvania jobs.?

In fiscal year 2011-12, the DCED Center for Trade Development (CTD) worked with 284 client firms reporting more than $831 million in sales of goods and services to overseas customers. Reflecting an increase of more than $300 million from the previous year, new exports facilitated by the CTD supported the creation of 6,897 new jobs.

To further develop international business growth, companies looking to sell their goods and services overseas can participate in Pennsylvania International Week (PIW) events from Sept. 10 -21. Pennsylvania?s authorized trade representatives will meet at each event with companies seeking foreign market intelligence, agents and distributor candidates, industry and government contacts, as well as provide on-the-ground assistance when companies visit these foreign markets.

?Connecting our manufacturers to global markets was recently highlighted in the Governor?s Manufacturing Advisory Council report as a way to grow the industry in the state,? Walker said. ?PIW will help introduce our companies to new markets, potential clients and the opportunity for increased sales. New growth means new jobs for Pennsylvanians.?

PIW will feature 20 authorized trade representatives from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Overall, the state boasts the largest network of international assistance in the United States, ensuring that Pennsylvania businesses have the necessary resources to compete in the ever-emerging global marketplace.

This year?s events will include a series of presentations, seminars and networking events for businesses to be held at 10 locations throughout the state.

The Pennsylvania International Week schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, Sept. 10 in Bethlehem at the Ben Franklin Technology Center
