Sam Hurd Co-Defendant, Toby Lujan, Pleads Guilty To Drug Charge

DALLAS -- A Dallas man charged along with former NFL player Sam Hurd pleaded guilty Friday to attempting to buy several kilograms of cocaine with Hurd's money in hopes of establishing a large-scale drug distribution network.

Toby Lujan pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. His plea deal calls for a prison sentence of 5 to 40 years. It also requires him to testify if asked by prosecutors.

Lujan signed court documents saying he told a law enforcement informant in December about a potential drug buyer named "Sam" who played for the Chicago Bears. Lujan gave the informant Hurd's phone number so the two could discuss prices and quantities of cocaine.

One week later, Hurd was arrested after an alleged meeting at a Chicago area steakhouse with an undercover officer posing as a drug trafficker. According to court documents, Hurd accepted a package of what he thought was cocaine and told the officer he wanted to buy five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area.

Hurd has pleaded not guilty.

Lujan's attorney, Andrew Garcia Jr., declined to comment Friday on why Lujan decided to plead guilty. Hurd's attorneys did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Trial for Hurd and a third defendant, his cousin Jesse Tyrone Chavful, is scheduled for October 9.

Lujan was pulled over in July 2011 in a Cadillac Escalade belonging to Hurd, prosecutors said. He was carrying $88,000 in a canvas bag stained with marijuana residue. That same day, Lujan tried to purchase several kilograms of cocaine for Hurd, according to prosecutors.

"Lujan knew that Hurd wanted to acquire cocaine to sell to others, and Lujan agreed to help Hurd with this illicit venture," said a court filing signed by both Lujan and prosecutors.

Lujan allegedly told an informant that he could conduct drug deals after hours at a car-care shop where he worked in suburban Dallas.

The Bears would eventually cut Hurd, a San Antonio native who also played for the Dallas Cowboys. He was out on $100,000 bond, but was arrested earlier this month after failing two drug tests. Hurd admitted to using marijuana, according to prosecutors.

He is scheduled to appear before a Dallas magistrate judge Tuesday.

Telescope Innovator Shines His Genius On New Fields

You may not be familiar with the name Roger Angel, but if there were ever a scientist with a creative streak a mile wide, it would be he.

Angel is an astronomer. He's famous for developing an entirely new way of making really large, incredibly precise telescope mirrors. But his creativity doesn't stop there. He's now turned his attention to solar power, hoping to use the tricks he learned from capturing distant light from stars to do a more cost-efficient job of capturing light from the Sun.

It's always fun working with Roger, because he has different ideas about completely unrelated things that he wants to talk to you about. And that's just fun.

"Roger's always been someone who has lots of wild ideas; some of them are superb, some of them probably not so good. But he's incredibly creative," says Brian Schmidt of the Australian National University in Canberra. "That creativity coupled to sort of a genius is quite rare. So Roger's well-known around the world for having these brilliant insights of how to solve problems."

There's something important you should know about Schmidt: He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics last year for discovering that the expansion of the universe was accelerating. He says most scientists ? and he includes himself ? aren't the creative problem-solvers that Roger Angel is.

"We tend to be the people that close out the game, and you know, do what is obvious and do it well," he says. "Where Roger is the person who really takes you and puts you into a new track and starts new ideas."

The Mirror Man

Angel runs the mirror lab at the University of Arizona in Tucson. I dropped by this past January as Angel and his colleagues were about to cast one of their enormous mirrors 25-feet across.The process Angel invented solves a problem that had confounded telescope makers: how to make a mirror that big out of a solid block of glass.

Angel solved the problem with a design the creates a piece of glass with a hollow, honeycomb interior. The process involves loading glass onto a honeycomb-shaped mold in a giant rotating furnace. When the temperature reaches 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit ? a point known as High Fire ? the glass melts and slumps into the mold.

Why a rotating furnace? By rotating, the glass begins to take on the parabolic shape it ultimately needs to have to focus starlight. It takes nearly a year to make one of these giant mirrors. He's made more than a dozen now.

Angel's mind is awash in ideas. For example, in the past decade or so, Angel has been searching for ways to do something about the threat from global warming.

In 2006, he wrote a paper exploring the feasibility of sending a huge glass shield into space and placing it in a spot where it would deflect 2 percent of the sun's rays headed for Earth. Doing that would counteract the warming effects of greenhouse gasses, according to Angel.

It's an ambitious notion. You'd need a shield "a bit less than 2,000 miles across. Pretty big," says Angel. You'd also need a new launching system to get the shield into space. Traditional rockets wouldn't do. Angel says a kind of magnetic gun that could send up the shield one small piece at a time should do the trick.

"It's always fun working with Roger, because he has different ideas about completely unrelated things that he wants to talk to you about. And that's just fun," says James Burge, a colleague of Angel's at the University of Arizona.

Burge says Angel doesn't just have a lot of ideas. "He also has the ability to do the quick calculations or the very quick experiment to be able to see which ideas are good. And that's great. He energizes us with that."

Harnessing The Power Of The Sun

Angel is now turning his energizing energies to energy. Solar energy, to be precise. He says his experience with telescope mirrors should help him build cost-effective solar power systems.

"That's what I've been doing for the last few years," says Angel, "[to] try to figure out how to make good-enough mirrors ? much lower quality than what we use for astronomy ? but good enough to get the sunlight to a decent image, and how to get those mounted so you can point them at the Sun without too much steel and cost."

Lowering the cost is key. Right now people don't choose electricity from solar power stations because for the most part, it's a lot cheaper to get electricity from stations powered by fossil fuels.

Angel took me to an abandoned swimming pool on the University of Arizona campus where he's built a working prototype of his solar power system.

It looks a bit like a giant box kite. A white steel frame holds a 10-foot-square mirror. The frame is mounted on a turret that can track the sun. Angel says that to save money, he uses ordinary window glass with a mirrored surface. He's figured out a way to bend glass panels into the right shape so that the light is concentrated on solar cells. Concentrating the light makes the solar cell more efficient at turning the light energy into electricity.

The prototype only makes a few kilowatts, but Angel told me he has some ideas of how he'd like to use that energy.

"What's the most useful thing you can do with a few kilowatts of power?" he says. "Well, you can charge your rechargeable car, your plug-in Prius. So I'd like to do that. It'd be a real good feeling driving around town, knowing the energy came from the sun."

McLaren driver, Jenson Button has said that the current leader in the drivers? championship, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari will face a tough battle in the season ahead.

Alonso is presently leading the drivers? rankings with 164 points and has a very good lead over his main competitors, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.

Although, Button said that he is very much impressed by the development of the Italian team in the season so far and admired the performance of the two-time world champion who has successfully limited the probable damage for his team. However, he insisted the Spaniard will not win the title easily as he will receive a strong challenge from the other contenders in the remaining nine races of the season.

?The team [Ferrari] have done a great job to get the points they have, but I don't think they've really had the speed,? Button said. ?They are going to manage it well, they are a great team and Fernando is a great driver. But it's tough when you see other teams winning races consistently and I think that might be happening over the next few races.?

In addition, he said that even though he is 88 points behind Alonso in the drivers? standings, nevertheless, he asserted that he is looking forward to come up stronger in the approaching races and is aiming to secure a competitive position.

Besides, he said that after facing difficulties in few races, they have managed to perform stronger in the last couple of grands prix on which he is extremely happy. He also said that their car has got the potential to achieve more and they are planning to launch some major updates in it so as to make a strong appearance in the Belgian GP.

?So the general car is good and the improvements that we've put on it at the last two races have been great and I think we're very good at getting everything together at the moment,? he added.

Above and beyond, it will be interesting to see how the Woking based team comes up in the second half of the season.

Key moments in Hewlett-Packard's recent history

On Wednesday, Hewlett-Packard Co. said it suffered an $8.9 billion loss during its most recent quarter after taking a previously announced charge against earnings for an acquisition that hasn't panned out the way management envisioned. It comes as the maker of personal computers struggles to compete with mobile devices.

Here's a timeline of some key events in HP's history since it acquired the PC business:

? Sept. 3, 2001: HP announces it is buying fellow computer maker Compaq Computer in a deal that would create a formidable rival to IBM.

? May 3, 2002: HP and Compaq combine businesses following a contentious road to the acquisition, which was opposed by former director Walter Hewlett, the son of HP co-founder William Hewlett. The final acquisition price was $19 billion. HP added the letter Q to its ticker symbol to create "HPQ."

? Feb. 9, 2005: CEO Carly Fiorina steps down amid upheaval about the company's performance following her contested decision to buy Compaq.

? March 29, 2005: Mark Hurd named as new CEO. Starts job in April.

? May 3: Leaked memo from Apotheker shows the CEO warning of "another tough quarter" for the company, sending HP's shares sharply lower. The memo says management needs to "watch every penny and minimize all hiring."

? Aug. 18: HP announces it will discontinue its tablet computer and smartphone products and may sell or spin off its PC division.

? Sept. 23: HP fires Apotheker after just 11 months and replaces him with billionaire businesswoman and political aspirant Meg Whitman, who accelerates an internal review on the fate of the PC division.

? Oct. 27: HP says it will keep the PC division after all, saying that keeping it is right for the company, its customers, shareholders and business partners.

? Dec. 9: HP says that instead of selling its webOS mobile system or killing it off, it's making it available as open-source software that anyone can use and modify freely. HP says it still plans to develop and support webOS. In offering it to the open-source community, the company is hoping more mobile apps will be developed under webOS.

? Feb. 22, 2012: Whitman urges investors to be patient and talks of a "multiyear journey" for a turnaround. She says she has a good sense of what the company needs to do, but it will take time to fix HP's internal operations and make investments to grow in areas such as security services, information management and Internet-based systems known as cloud computing.

? March 21: HP says it will combine its PC and printers businesses. The move will save an unspecified amount of money as the company expects improved productivity and efficiency and streamlined customer support and supply chain.

? April 11: Estimates from research groups Gartner and IDC suggest that HP has regained much of the PC business it had lost during the period of indecision.

? May 23: HP says it plans to eliminate 27,000 jobs, the largest payroll purge in its 73-year history. The reductions will affect about 8 percent of its nearly 350,000 employees by the time the overhaul is completed in October 2014. HP hopes to avoid many layoffs by offering early retirement packages. The company expects to save as much as $3.5 billion annually from the job cuts and other austerity measures.

? May 30: Bill Veghte is promoted to chief operating officer, just four months after he was tasked with shaping HP's strategy. He will keep those duties, while HP named an outsider to replace him as head of HP's software division.

? Aug. 8: HP says it will take a massive charge against its earnings for the quarter through July, leading to a record loss of nearly $9 billion. The charge is the result of a writedown of the value of its services business, reflecting that the company overpaid for EDS in 2008. The services business provides information technology and outsourcing services to corporations. It has seen flat revenue for the last two years, and its operating profit has declined.

? Wednesday: HP says it suffered an $8.9 billion loss during its most recent quarter as it accounted for the EDS acquisition, which hasn't panned out the way management envisioned. HP's revenue sank 5 percent from last year to $29.7 billion. That was about $500 million below analyst projections.
