Gene linked to increasing pancreatic cancer risk

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mutations in the ATM gene may increase the hereditary risk for pancreatic cancer, according to data published Thursday in Cancer Discovery, the latest journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most morbid cancers, with less than five percent of those diagnosed with the disease surviving to five years. Approximately 10 percent of patients come from families with multiple cases of pancreatic cancer.

"There was significant reason to believe this clustering was due to genetics, but we had not, to this point, been able to find the causative genes that explained the cluster of pancreatic cancer for a majority of these families," said lead author Alison Klein, associate professor at Johns Hopkins University and director of the National Familial Pancreas Tumor Registry.

Klein and colleagues used next-generation sequencing, including whole genome and whole exome analyses, and identified ATM gene mutations in two kindreds with familial pancreatic cancer.

Klein said knowledge of the presence of the ATM gene could lead to better screening for pancreatic cancer, the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death.

Stocks up on new home deals, job growth prospects

NEW YORK (AP) ? Better news on home sales and improved prospects for job growth sent stocks higher on Wall Street Thursday.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 135 points, nearly making up its 140-point loss from the day before. The S&P 500 edged back into the black for 2011, with just one more day of trading left in the year.

The four-week average of unemployment claims fell to a three-and-a-half-year low, an indication that hiring could pick up. Also, the number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes in November rose more than 7 percent to the highest level in a year and a half, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Quincy Krosby, Prudential Financial's market strategist, said the reports were encouraging signals for the economy going in to 2012.

"The correlation between jobs and housing has been crystal-clear this year," Krosby said. "Parts of the country where jobs are more plentiful are the ones where the housing market has held up."

Krosby said the correlation has become more pronounced after the real estate bust, when lenders became reluctant to even consider customers for a mortgage unless they held jobs. She said it's a noticeable trend in many cities nationwide.

For instance, Boston's 1.1 percent drop in home prices since last year was one of the lowest among metro areas tracked by S&P/Case-Shiller index. The city's unemployment rate is 6.2 percent, much lower than the national average of 8.6 percent.

The positive housing news sent the stocks of home builders sharply higher. Masco Corp. soared 8.4 percent, the most in the S&P 500. PulteGroup Inc. rose 6 percent and Lennar Corp. gained 4.6 percent.

The Dow closed at 12,287.04, a gain of 135.63 points, or 1.1 percent. For the year, the Dow is up 709 points, or 6 percent.

The S&P 500 rose 13.38 points, or 1.07 percent, to 1,263.02. That's just 5 points above where the index started the year.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 23.76 points, or 0.92 percent, to 2,613.74. The index if down 39 points for the year.

Trading was very light as investors get ready to close the books on 2011. Markets will be closed Monday in observance of New Year's Day, which falls on Sunday.

Volume on the New York Stock Exchange was 2 billion shares, less than half of its recent average. Gaining stocks led losing ones four-to-one.

The euro fell to its lowest level against the dollar in more than a year and its lowest against the Japanese yen in a decade. The euro went as low as $1.28 versus the dollar, its weakest since September 2010.

Investors continued to be worried that Italy's 10-year borrowing rate remains uncomfortably close to 7 percent, a level that economists consider unsustainable. Greece, Ireland and Portugal all had to seek relief from their creditors after their 10-year bond yields rose above 7 percent.

Italy paid 6.98 percent on a 10-year bond auction where it raised $3.3 billion. That's lower than the 7.56 percent it had to pay at an equivalent auction last month, but not low enough to assuage investors. Italy's new premier said his government has more to do before it convinces financial markets it can manage the heavy debts that have made it the focus of the euro zone crisis.

In other corporate news:

? Chesapeake Midstream Partners rose 5 percent after the natural gas systems operator agreed to acquire Chesapeake Energy Corp.'s pipeline business.

? Hill International Inc. rose 3 percent after the construction management company was awarded a $3.3 million contract to build a new stadium in Iraq.

? Sears Holdings Corp. fell 1 percent as investors worried over the fate of the retailer, two days after it said it was closing over 100 stores nationwide.

Romney's ride stays remarkably smooth in GOP race (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Regardless of whether Mitt Romney wins the Iowa Republican caucus Tuesday, he has enjoyed a remarkably easy presidential race so far.

When his rivals have stopped battering each other long enough to criticize him, they've often done so tentatively and ham-handedly. Romney's injury-free journey is all the more surprising because, despite some obvious campaign skills, he has well-known vulnerabilities ripe for attack.

The turn of events has astonished campaign pros in both parties, who expected Romney to be more bloodied. And it has dismayed President Barack Obama's allies, who assumed Republicans would at least soften up the man they viewed as the likeliest nominee from the start.

"By all rights, Romney should have spent the last six months with a target painted on his back," said Dan Schnur, a former GOP adviser who teaches politics at the University of Southern California. "But he has been able to keep his head low," Schnur said, while a series of rivals have taken turns quarreling, surging and falling.

New polls show Romney heading into Tuesday's caucus as the front-runner in a state that seems ill-suited to his background, and which snubbed him four years ago. The Iowa Republican caucus is usually dominated by evangelical voters, home-schoolers and other social conservatives. Yet his rivals have done little here to turn those dynamics against Romney, a Mormon who supported legalized abortion and mandatory health insurance as governor of liberal Massachusetts.

Romney began this year's campaign de-emphasizing Iowa. But his rivals' inability to produce a clear leader has opened a possible path for him to seize the prize.

A Romney win in Iowa, which is far from certain, would make him the clear favorite to win the nomination. Next up is the Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire. Romney has a second home there, and the GOP voters' greater emphasis on financial matters is better suited to his politics.

Romney's luck stems largely from his opponents' early conclusion that he had enough money and experience to go deep into the nominating contest, and only one viable alternative could emerge. They've been competing for that spot, and attacking each other, ever since.

"If you have modest resources, you're going to spend your time differentiating yourself from the rest of the non-Romney crowd," said GOP lobbyist and strategist Mike McKenna.

Campaign attack ads in Iowa underscore the point. When former House Speaker Newt Gingrich surged in polls earlier this month, he was quickly pilloried by TV ads and mailings financed by groups associated with Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.

In two weeks in Iowa, a PAC that supports Romney dumped $2.6 million into the effort, according to records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. Having little money to respond, Gingrich has plummeted in the polls.

A far smaller sum was spent on anti-Romney ads, mostly by a pro-Obama group trying to fill the vacuum.

Campaign veterans say Perry had the best chance to establish himself early as the Romney alternative. That could have positioned him to hammer away at his Massachusetts rival. A proven fundraiser with 10 years as Texas governor, Perry rocketed to the top of GOP polls when he announced his candidacy in mid-August.

But he quickly fell after debate performances that typified the GOP field's inability, or unwillingness, to train sustained fire on Romney's obvious soft spots: his changed positions on abortion, gun control and gay rights, and his policy of requiring Massachusetts residents to buy health insurance or pay a penalty.

In a Sept. 22 debate in Florida, Perry started to describe Romney's various flip-flops. But he stammered and wandered so badly that it was nearly impossible to understand his point.

After that, the GOP field showed little interest in launching focused attacks on Romney's policy changes.

Romney was equally lucky in June. Then-candidate Tim Pawlenty had said in a TV interview that "Romneycare" was the inspiration for "Obamacare," the GOP term for the Democrats' 2010 health care overhaul. But in a televised debate that followed, Pawlenty refused to repeat the criticism. His reticence contributed to his fast decline, and gave Romney a big break.

Conservative columnist George Will said on ABC in September: "Tim Pawlenty got in trouble when he got a chance to attack Romney and didn't. Perry's in trouble because he attacked Romney and did it so incompetently."

Romney has enjoyed other breaks. James Pethokoukis of the conservative American Enterprise Institute noted that Romney recently stopped short of endorsing a value-added tax without ruling it out in all circumstances.

"Many conservatives/libertarians simply hate, hate, hate the idea of a VAT," Pethokoukis wrote. "I would be surprised if those quotes don't end up in a 30-second, anti-Romney ad in Iowa or New Hampshire."

So far, they haven't.

Democrats contrast Romney's easy ride with Obama's grueling Iowa campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards, two well-financed politicians with sharp debating skills.

Rodell Mollineau heads American Bridge, a Democratic group that gathers information to use against Republicans in campaigns. This year's GOP candidates have tried to attack Romney at times, Mollineau said, "but they're just not very good at it."

"Perry has the money, but he can't get a sentence out," Mollineau said. Gingrich is articulate, he said, but hasn't raised enough money to wound Romney with broadcast ads.

Romney's luck continued Wednesday. Rep. Michele Bachmann criticized two rivals during her fast-moving bus tour of Iowa. She said Perry has spent "27 years as a political insider," and Paul would be "dangerous as president" because of his hands-off views on national security.

Romney largely escaped her ire.

Stamford Mayor: No Foul Play In Fire That Killed 5 On Christmas

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork)?? The deadly Christmas Day blaze that killed three children and their grandparents was apparently caused by embers from a fireplace that had been taken to a mudroom or trash enclosure on the first flioor.

The fire at the home of Madonna Badger killed her parents and three children.

The family was apparently sleeping in the home, and several bedrooms appear to have been on the second floor, where renovations were taking place.

?Ms. Badger was out a window,? said an official. ?When the crews arrived on the scene, the male occupant was down on the ground. He was trying to gain entry into the house.?

Michael Borcina jumped out of the building and told firefighters that he had led the children down to the second floor. However, the heat of the blaze had apparently driven the children and grandparents back up to the third floor.

?After 37 and a half, 38 years on the job, you?re never prepared for anything like that,? said Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte. ?Can you be prepared for this? No. Is it our job to do something? Yes.?

Lomer Johnson, 71, apparently died trying to save one of his granddaughters. His body was found face down, apparently after stepping out a window onto a temporary structure put up as part of the renovation. The temporary structure couldn?t support his weight.

Inside the second-floor window, officials found a stack of books and one of the children.

?It appears that he either was trying to get to his granddaughter from the outside or that he was leading his granddaughter out,? Mayor Michael Pavia said.

Conte said 47-year-old Badger was screaming for her kids and told responding firefighters the bedrooms the kids were in.

Firefighters scrambled up to the to the third floor in an effort to save the trapped victims. However, the heat and flames were too intense, and the kids weren?t in the rooms when firefighters arrived there. They made another attempt to rescue the kids, but again to no avail.

One fire captain suffered second degree burns on his face and two other firefighters suffered from smoke inhalation, officials said.

LISTEN: Stamford Fire 911 Calls

Officials said portions of the home were in the middle of being renovated and should not have been occupied.

?The house was under construction. And until it was fully occupied, our buildings department will issue a certificate of approval for a resident to be in there. And until that time, we did not do a final inspection. We were not called for a final inspection of the premises,? said Ernie Orgera, the Director of Operations for Stamford. ?They should not have been in the home unless they had a certificate of approval.?

Orgera said there was a hardwired fire alarm system that would?ve notified Stamford in the event of a fire, but it does not appear that it was connected. Orgera said it was not clear whether or not the home had battery operated smoke detectors.

Audio of a number 911 calls regarding the fire was also released.

?There?s a huge fire at the house next door to us. The whole house is on fire,? says one caller.?There?s three kids and a woman,? the caller adds, before her call was cut off.

?I can?t imagine waking up one day and having my children and my parents dead in one swoop like that,? said Stamford resident Tom Olson. ?I don?t think?I even understand the depth of that pain.?

The bodies of?Badger?s three daughters and their grandparents were found on the upper floors.

Conte says it will be some time before his firefighters overcome their own grief.

?Everyone has very young children, this is a very young department,? Conte told CBS 2?s Jay Dow. ?[It's] probably their first fatal fire that they have seen. We?re going to evaluate them today and I?m pretty sure a lot of them are going to need counseling for a very long time.?

A Facebook page has been set up to express support for the Badger family. Click here for more information.

Lomer Johnson spent his retirement working as a Santa Claus.

He?had a long?career working as a safety chief at a liquor company in Kentucky before he retired.

Johnson and his wife?Pauline lived in Southbury, Conn., but were staying with their daughter and grandchildren for Christmas.

?Pauline was very outgoing,? said neighbor Barbara Jeffery. ?Very vivacious, loving. A great friend.?

The day before he died, Lomer Johnson was in costume and greeting children as Santa at the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Midtown.

The home was torn down on Monday after fire officials deemed it unsafe.

Police: Utah mom, son rescued after Facebook post

SALT LAKE CITY?A Utah woman used Facebook to seek help after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage at a residence for nearly five days, police said.

Police Sgt. Jon Arnold said the woman hid in a closet with a laptop to post her plea for help on the social networking website, saying she and her son would be "dead by morning" if they were not rescued.

The post prompted someone to call police, who went to the home to check on the woman's welfare.

"Facebook was her only outlet that she had at the home," Arnold said. "It just happened that she was able to use it."

Police arrested Troy Reed Critchfield, 33, and booked him into jail Saturday for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty and other charges.

Salt Lake County Jail records show Critchfield initially refused to let police in the house.

The papers say the woman shook her head to indicate "No," when officers asked if she was OK.

After police separated the couple, the woman told officers she and her child had not been allowed to leave the home and that she repeatedly had been hit, choked and sexually abused over a period of nearly five days. Jail records show the woman also claimed Critchfield had taken her cell phone and the phone of a disabled child also in the home.

"She claims that any time she went to go to a door, he physically assaulted her," Arnold told The Associated Press on Monday.

The woman had bruises and other physical injuries consistent with allegations, but refused to go to a hospital for treatment, he said.

She also told officers that Critchfield grabbed the boy's arms and treated him roughly, while also refusing to let her feed the family dog, jail papers state.

Critchfield remained in jail on Monday. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney.

Utah State Court records show that in December 2010 Critchfield pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault and obstruction of justice charges in connection with a domestic violence incident.

A judge sentenced Critchfield to a prison term of five years, but suspended the punishment for a 120-day jail term and three years of probation.

12 Best Christmas Pop Songs Of All Time

Justin Bieber and Mariah Carey make our list of yuletide favorites.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber

Looking for some inspiration for Christmas-themed music? Well, don't worry, MTV News has wrapped up a special holiday playlist so that you can get into the spirit of the season. Grab a glass of eggnog, put on your best reindeer sweater and snuggle up by the fire with these choice tunes.

"Mistletoe," Justin Bieber
Bieber's modern-day missive (released in 2011 off of Under the Mistletoe) about kissing under the mistletoe certainly harks back to carols of days gone by, but he updates the narrative using his own fly-boy language, referring to his girl as his "shawty." Awww!

"All I Want for Christmas Is You," Mariah Carey
Perhaps the most ubiquitous pop song of the last 20 years, Carey's iconic single may have been reimagined by Bieber, but it will forever be associated with Carey, her skimpy Santa suit and her desire to be reunited with her boy.

"Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays," *NSYNC
Spunky and funky, *NSYNC's 1998 track is all about getting together with your friends and family and wishing them "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" — a fitting sentiment for folks of all persuasions.

"My Only Wish (This Year)," Britney Spears
Like Carey before her, Britney uses her sugary sweet, incredibly innocent ode to the holidays to pine away for the one thing she hopes Santa can get her: her one true love.

"Last Christmas," Wham!
George Michael had one message for that ex-special someone: This year, to save him from tears, he'll give his heart to someone special. After it was released, the song immediately became a Christmas staple with radio and local malls playing it endlessly through the season.

"Do They Know It's Christmas?" Band Aid
While many Christmas songs focus on chestnuts roasting on an open fire, 1984's A-list-filled charity single reminded the world that not everyone has chestnuts or an open fire.

"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
This song had already been recorded and re-recorded, but when Springsteen put his Jersey sass on the Christmas classic, it became the type of jovial, rocked-out tune cool enough to top the lists of his fans.

"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," U2
Darlene Love may have recorded the track in 1963, but Bono and his boys put their own spin on the song when they released it in 1987. It's all about wanting your baby to come home to you on Christmas. And, really, who doesn't want that?

"Baby, It's Cold Outside," Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson
In a world where these two are still together, it would actually be a cute idea to have this real-life couple sing about wanting to stay warm with one another on a chilly winter night.

"Don't Shoot Me Santa," The Killers
Every Christmas playlist needs a kooky take on the holidays, and the Las Vegas band's spin on pleading with Santa to cut them a break is a bit country, a bit rock and roll, and all fun. See also: Blink-182's "I Won't Be Home for Christmas."

"I'll Be Home for Christmas," Michael Bublé
Bublé's Christmas album has been sitting at the top of the charts for weeks, and this particularly stirring Christmas ballad is all about making sure you're with the people you love for the holidays.

"Santa Baby," Madonna
Cooing and gushing about what she wants from her Santa Baby for Christmas is an incredibly decadent idea full of incredibly lavish gift ideas. Pretend like there's no recession, blast this one and imagine a world where cars and jewels are totally affordable Christmas gifts.

Which is your favorite Christmas pop song? Tell us in the comments!

North Korea to be at center of Japan-China talks (AP)

BEIJING ? Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda arrives in Beijing on Sunday for talks focused on North Korea and promoting stability in the closed country after the death of Kim Jong Il.

Noda's first official visit to Beijing would normally have focused on bilateral issues, such as squabbles over islands claimed by both countries, but the death of Kim a little more than a week ago and the announcement of his son Kim Jong Un as the country's "supreme leader" has shifted the focus away from bilateral issues.

Noda is the first foreign leader to meet China's leaders since Kim's death and he will emphasize the need to get stalled six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program back on track.

"I would like exchange views and information in detail so as to avert a harmful effect on peace and stability on the Korean peninsula," Noda told reporters in Tokyo before he left for his trip.

Noda meets his counterpart Wen Jiabao on Sunday, and then President Hu Jintao on Monday before returning home. His visit to China was planned before Kim's death was announced Dec. 19.

He will tell Wen that China's role as chair of the six-party talks is "very important," Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Saturday.

The six-party talks, which include the two Koreas, the United States and Russia, are aimed at disarming North Korea of its nuclear capability. Pyongyang walked out on the talks in 2009 ? and exploded a second nuclear-test device ? but now wants to re-engage.

Last year, Pyongyang also was blamed for two military attacks on South Korea that heightened tensions on the peninsula.

Noda, who came to power in September, met Hu in November on the sidelines of an APEC meeting in Hawaii.

Japan does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, while China is the impoverished country's most important supporter and supplies it with food aid and much of its energy resources.

Noda also is expected to discuss the possibility of renting pandas for a zoo in Sendai to cheer up the northern Japanese region as it recovers from the tsunami disaster in March.

Japan and China have a list of sensitive topics they are trying to make progress on, including fights over islands and energy disputes in the East China Sea, and recently the arrests of Chinese fishermen Japan says have been illegally fishing in its waters.

The countries also want to make sure relations are on an even keel in the run-up to the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in September.

Solar Cells Made From a Spreadable Nanoparticle Paste

[unable to retrieve full-text content]An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at Notre Dame have created a nanoparticle paste, which acts as the main ingredient in solar cells that are very easy to construct. In a short video clip, they can be seen assembling a functional solar cell with little more than a heat gun, tape, and some binder clips. The paste is made from a mix of t-butanol, water, and a mix of cadmium selenide with cadmium sulfide nanoparticles. So far, the experimental devices are not nearly as efficient as standard solar cells, but they were just developed. If the materials were slightly less toxic, it might even be a project that kids could do at home."

The 7 Worst Communications Failures Of 2011 | Fast Company

This blog is written by a member of our expert blogging community and expresses that expert's views alone.

Welcome to my annual list of who?s been naughty and who's been nice as a speaker or communicator. This week comprises my list of 2011?s losers. (Winners will be announced next week.)

  • Joe Paterno:? Penn State football coach Paterno allegedly did not properly follow up on reports of pedophilia by his well-known assistant coach. While the obvious legal and ethical failings are the big story, his central message and core promise were also destroyed. To date, Paterno still has not spoken to his fans in a heartfelt way, which is only prolonging and deepening the hurt and pain many of them feel.
  • Herman Cain:? After multiple claims of sexual harassment by at least three women didn?t do the trick, Cain finally got out of the presidential race when a woman came forward to announce they?d had a 13-year affair. He was able to stay in the race as long as he did because he?s a masterful presenter. Presentation skills can take you only so far, however. Substance and credibility form the other half of the persuasion equation, both of which had been long missing from the Cain campaign.?
  • Wall Street banks: The Street?s big banks and financial institutions continue to publicly speak and behave in ways that the communicates to the average person, ?We don?t play by your silly rules.? Either they?re getting bad advice from their corporate communications departments or they?re ignoring them. Whatever the problem, they?re missing a tremendous opportunity to be statesman-like, help the country, make a bad situation better instead of worse, and generate a lot of new business in the process.
  • Anthony Weiner: It was not so much his frat-boy style transgressions that cut short the congressman?s career, as his week-long series of loud and insistent denials that caused the media to camp out on the doorstep of and cast all manner of aspersion on the object of his ?affections,? a 21-year-old journalism student. It?s one thing to mess up your own life. It?s another thing entirely to mess up someone else?s.
  • U.S. Congress: I can tell you why Congress has a historically low approval rating of only 9%: These lawmakers don?t get out enough. And, when they do, it?s to the echo chamber of like-minded voters and corporate and special interests, to whom they?re beholden. Living and working in their well-protected cocoons, they?ve forgotten they work for constituents, as well as how to talk to them, and, thus, have lost all connection
  • Barack Obama: Last year, Obama made both lists. Regrettably, not this year. What I said in 2010 was that while I've been a huge fan of Obama's big speeches, I always worried about his ability to fare well in smaller venues and connect emotionally with voters. His inability to fashion a coherent narrative and comfort (lead) the public through difficult times contributed greatly to his party's midterm losses. In this vital skill, he has been an abject failure. What a shame.

I?ve no doubt I left many worthy candidates out. What do you think? I want names.

Next week, the 2011 winners.?

First Person: High Health, Grocery Costs Bolster Creativity, Skimping (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Deloitte Center for Health Solutions recently reported that consumers are paying an extra $1,355 in out-of-pocket health care costs. These costs, Deloitte reports include, "ambulance services, alternative medicines, nutritional products and vitamins, weight-loss centers and supervisory care of elderly family members." Read more here.

As someone who works part-time as a communications specialist, I do not have health insurance at my job; however, my husband's full-time job in the insurance field allows us to buy health insurance for me. Unfortunately, his paychecks are cut dramatically every two weeks because so much is taken out to cover my health care costs. These costs are more than $400 a month, and It has gotten worse in the last few years. I can't help but wonder if the new health care reforms will really make a difference for people like us. Will they?

The health care reforms slowly implemented every year are actually causing out-of-pocket health care costs for consumers to increase. For some, like me, these costs are rising faster than the average person's income. I can attest to this. The Deloitte study compared hours taken off from work per month to look after a family member or friend and the wages lost in the process. The results in the report point out the value of unpaid care is $199 billion a year, or $12.60 per hour.

Although we've never had to take time out of work for one another or a family member, we feel the difference when we go to a chiropractor or a naturopath. Going to the chiropractor means spending an extra $40 or more that's not covered by insurance.

Also, we have to meet our health insurance deductibles, and ours is around $1,000. I recently went to my naturopath medical doctor and spent $700 out of pocket (between two visits and blood tests). Also, we spend a lot on preventative care, in terms of vitamins. Although the health insurance covers some costs, for the most part, we end up paying the difference. Unfortunately, I use my credit card more than I should for these things.

There are other costs besides health care, too

Besides the national health care crisis we're in, the price of groceries, gas and the price of living index have gone up tremendously, making it extremely difficult to have any extra money at the end of the month. We easily spend $150 to $200 a week these days on food and gas. Our employers have had their own economic bad news, too, and as a result, raises have been put on hold.

Eating out, for many, is a thing of the past -- for us, too. If we do go out, we're careful to go somewhere that has two for one specials or places that offer liberal portions so we can stretch the left over's to serve for another meal or two. Some of these deals have come from Applebees, Bob Evans and other advertised deals from newspaper inserts or mailings. As for fast food, Taco Bell seems to have the best prices for the quantity. I've started cooking more meals at home and carefully shop for good deals. I often fix lots of fresh vegetables as sides and one entree like a lasagna or a soup that lasts us for several days. I look for good ideas at Recipes.com and even WeightWatchers.com. The key is to get good nutrition for less.

The 2011 National Grocers Association Consumer Survey Report finds that over half of consumers are cooking more at home these days. A solid majority (69 percent) feels comfortable in the kitchen. Many like to experiment with cooking and 75 percent say they want to become better home cooks." Read more here.

Other ways we've saved money is by figuring out exactly what we need per month, and sticking to it as closely as possible. This means no impulsive spending.

I've also been clipping more coupons and shopping at the grocery store on days of sales. To extend my savings, I've also started shopping more at Aldees, Dollar Stores and Costco's. As a result, I've watched my dollar stretch considerably.

Finally, we've really learned to plan our trips carefully. With gas prices up again, planning trips is important. We make a list of places we have to go and try not to make more trips than necessary. The hardest thing for me is driving the speed limit or below, but when I do, it works and I save money by using less gas. Also, getting tune-ups and oil changes regularly has helped maintain good gas mileage.

I'm sure we will implement additional changes in spending habits as necessary. In the home, we've already gotten an energy audit and implemented the recommendations given. As a result our heat and electricity bills have decreased. There are so many things all of us can do to save money. We just need to be ready to make the changes.

Chelsea slips, Dempsey scores

Daniel Sturridge

updated 3:16 p.m. ET Dec. 17, 2011

LONDON - Chelsea missed a chance to put pressure on the two Manchester clubs at the top of the Premier League on Saturday, yielding a goal with two minutes left in a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Wigan.

Chelsea looked on course for a fourth straight Premier League victory when Daniel Sturridge scored his eighth goal of the season in the 59th minute. But Wigan dominated the second half and Jordi Gomez tapped in from close range after a mistake by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The result left Chelsea with 32 points from 16 matches, four behind second-place Manchester United and six behind longtime leader City.

Defending champion United could take first place for the first time since mid-October if it wins at Queens Park Rangers on Sunday and Manchester City loses to visiting Arsenal. Sunderland is at fourth-place Tottenham and Liverpool is at Aston Villa in Sunday's other matches.

The draw left Wigan in the relegation zone with Blackburn and Bolton, which remained anchored to the bottom of the league after a 2-0 loss at Fulham

Two weeks after becoming the most prolific American scorer in England's top division, Clint Dempsey scored his 38th Premier League goal to get Fulham rolling. He scored his fifth league goal this season and eighth overall with a 32nd-minute header from Bryan Ruiz's cross. Costa Rica forward Ruiz chipped over goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to make it 2-0 two minutes later.

Last-place Bolton has only nine points from 16 games. That's one fewer than Blackburn, which lost 2-1 to visiting West Bromwich Albion. Peter Odemwingie scored West Brom's winning goal with a minute left.

Wolverhampton is one place and one point above the relegation zone after giving up two second-half goals in a 2-1 loss against Stoke. Stoke is three points behind Newcastle, which spent three months in the top four but is now without a win in five matches after drawing 0-0 with visiting Swansea.

In the League Championship, American defender Daniel Potts made his debut for West Ham in a 1-0 home draw against Barnsley. A member of the U.S. Under-20 team, Potts is captain of the Hammers' Under-18 team and signed a 2 1-2-year professional contract on Friday. He overcame leukemia two years ago.

BERLIN (AP) ? Defending champion Borussia Dortmund will go into the Bundesliga's four-week winter break three points behind leader Bayern Munich after beating last-place Freiburg 4-1.

Robert Lewandowski scored the first of his two goals in the seventh minute. Jan Rosenthal tied it in the 34th but Ilkay Guendogan restored the visitors' lead in the 44th, before Kevin Grosskreutz added another goal in the 59th and then crossed for Lewandowski to complete the scoring in the 70th.

On Friday, Bayern clinched the unofficial title of "winter champion" with a 3-0 win over Cologne on Friday.

Raul Gonzalez scored a hat-trick to help Schalke rout Werder Bremen 5-0, with Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Klaas Jan Huntelaar also scoring to complete a miserable evening for Werder goalkeeper Tim Wiese on his 30th birthday. Schalke and Dortmund have 34 points.

Relegation-threatened Nuremberg ended Bayer Leverkusen's six-game unbeaten run in the league with a 3-0 win, Wolfsburg beat Stuttgart 1-0, Hamburger SV drew 1-1 with Augsburg and Roman Hubnik scored in injury time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Hertha Berlin at Hoffenheim.

___

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Getafe rallied past Mallorca 2-1 on two goals by Abdel Barrada for its first road victory of the Spanish league season.

Barrada offset Ivan Ramis' opening goal when his shot deflected off a defender before landing in the back of the net in the 28th minute. In the 44th, he tapped Nicolas "Miku" Fedor's cross into an empty net.

Sergio Garcia's 84th-minute winner gave Espanyol a 2-1 victory at Sporting Gijon.

___

MILAN (AP) ? Chievo got back to winning ways in the Italian league with goals from Cyril Thereau and Gennaro Sardo in a 2-0 victory over Cagliari.

Thereau gave Chievo the lead in the 35th minute and Sardo struck shortly before the 60th, giving Chievo its first win in four matches.

Chievo moves into the top half of the standings ahead of the rest of the weekend games and is seven points off the relegation zone. Cagliari is one point behind.

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Carlos Bocanegra scored to help first-place Rangers defeat visiting Inverness 2-1 in the Scottish Premier League.

Bocanegra, one of three Americans starting for the defending champions, put Rangers ahead in the 55th minute with a close-range shot. Andrew Shinnie evened the scores 12 minutes later. Shinnie had a goal ruled out for offside before substitute Kyle Lafferty scored in the 87th minute.

Americans Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya also started for Rangers.

Rangers have 48 points to 41 for Celtic, which plays at St. Johnstone on Sunday.

___

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Sebastian Leto scored once in each half and set up a goal by Jean-Alain Boumsong to lead Panathinaikos to a 3-1 victory over visiting Asteras in the Greek league.

Fernando Usero scored a late goal for Asteras.

Panathinaikos overtook AEK for second place and is a point behind defending champion Olympiakos, which has played one more game. Olympiakos hosts Giannena and AEK plays at Atromitos on Sunday.

Ergotelis won 1-0 at Levadiakos and Xanthi beat visiting Panionios by the same score.

Japan PM says tsunami-hit nuclear plant is stable (AP)

TOKYO ? Declaring Japan has turned a corner in the battle to stabilize its tsunami-damaged nuclear plant, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced Friday the facility has achieved a stable state of "cold shutdown," a crucial step toward lifting evacuation orders and closing the plant.

Noda's announcement was intended to reassure the nation that significant progress has been made in the nine months since the March 11 tsunami sent three reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant into meltdowns in the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986.

But the plant 140 miles (230 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo remains vulnerable to problems, its surroundings are contaminated by radiation and closing the plant safely will take 30 or more years.

"The reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant have reached a state of cold shutdown," Noda said. "Now that we have achieved stability in the reactors, a major concern for the nation has been resolved."

Noda said he hopes conditions will improve quickly so that the people who have been displaced by the crisis can return home "even a day sooner."

"There are many issues that remain," Noda said. "Our battle is not over."

The government's official endorsement of the claim by Tokyo Electric Power Co. that the reactors have reached cold shutdown status is a necessary step toward revising evacuation zones around the plant and focusing efforts from simply stabilizing the facility to actually starting the arduous process of shutting it down.

But Noda acknowledged the assessment has some important caveats.

The government says Fukushima Dai-ichi has reached cold shutdown "conditions"_ a cautious phrasing reflecting the fact that TEPCO cannot measure temperatures of melted fuel in the damaged reactors in the same way as with normally functioning ones.

Even so, the announcement marks the end of the second phase of the government's lengthy roadmap to completely decommission the plant.

Officials can now start discussing whether to allow some evacuees to return to less-contaminated areas ? although a 12-mile (20-kilometer) zone around the plant is expected to remain off limits for years to come. The crisis displaced some 100,000 people.

Noda said the government will step up decontamination efforts and will ready 1 trillion yen ($12.8 billion) for urgently needed projects next year. He also said 30,000 workers will be trained.

A cold shutdown normally means a nuclear reactor's coolant system is at atmospheric pressure and its reactor core is at a temperature below 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), making it impossible for a chain reaction to take place.

According to TEPCO, temperature gauges inside the Fukushima reactors show the pressure vessel is at around 70 C (158 F). The government also says the amount of radiation now being released around the plant is at or below 1 millisievert per year ? equivalent to the annual legal exposure limit for ordinary citizens before the crisis began.

Akira Yamaguchi, a nuclear physicist at Osaka University, said that the government's definition of cold shutdown is disputable.

"But what's most important right now is that there aren't any massive radiation leaks any more," he said.

Putting longer-term issues aside, he warned that much of the backup equipment installed at the plant since the crisis began is makeshift and may break down. He said winter cold could test their strength.

Childhood cancer drugs cure now, may cause problems later, research shows

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Will a drug used to treat childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and other pediatric cancers cause heart problems later in life?

UB associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, Javier G. Blanco, PhD, who sees his work as a bridge between research and clinical practice, has focused recent efforts on trying to answer this question.

Blanco and colleagues' recent study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology looked for the underlying genetic answers to why some childhood cancer survivors who were treated with anthracylines -- powerful antibiotics like Adriamycin and Daunomycin -- developed cardiomyopathy, such as congestive heart failure, later in life.

"Anthracyclines are effective drugs used to treat a variety of pediatric cancers, they are also used to treat breast cancer and other malignancies in adults," Blanco says. "After cancer, survivors can develop cardiac toxicity anywhere from one year to more than 15 years after the initial chemotherapy with anthracyclines. The window separating the effectiveness of these drugs from their toxicity is narrow. The dosage has to be precise to achieve a therapeutic effect without toxicity."

Blanco explains that the key to individualizing any drug treatment comes down to understanding the way an individual is genetically coded to respond to the drug once it enters the body, and then adjusting the dose accordingly.

Working closely with Smita Bhatia, MD, MPH, chair of the Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope National Medical Center in California and senior author of the study, Blanco and a team of researchers decided to look at how the drug was broken down by enzymes encoded by specific genes.

The study, which began seven years ago, compared DNA genotypes of 170 childhood cancer survivors diagnosed with anthracycline-related cardiomyopathy to a control group of 317 survivors without heart disease.

Using the candidate gene approach, Blanco and his team were able to identify a tiny gene variant related to the risk of cardiotoxicity.

"We pinpointed the genetic difference or polymorphism that makes an enzyme work faster or slower in patients," said Blanco, "slower is better."

They zeroed-in on carbonyl reductases (CBR1 and CBR3) -- two enzymes that break down anthracyclines into cardiotoxic alcohol metabolites. Blanco notes that in mouse models, higher levels of CBRs or faster enzymes dictate higher levels of these metabolites -- and more cardio toxicity.

The research showed that the risk of cardiomyopathy was significantly increased among individuals with two copies of the "G" version of the CBR3 polymorphism when exposed to low-to-moderate doses of anthracycline.

Blanco says that while the results of the study validated the findings of an earlier study in a totally independent cohort of cancer survivors, further study is required.

"We have to be careful," says Blanco. "So far, we are showing an association, not yet causation. Our next step will be to conduct a prospective study -- where we don't study individuals who were exposed to anthracyclines in the past but follow them in real time as they are receiving the drug and after."

What does this mean for children who are taking or have taken anthracyclines?

"If we stop using anthracyclines we will not be able to cure up to 90 percent of the children who suffer from acute lymphoblastic leukemia." Blanco says. "Parents must continue to have their children's health monitored long after the cancer is cured to identify cardiac problems if they develop."

Blanco's research is primarily funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, among many others.

Richard Peña: Cinematic Renaissance in Spanish Film

Over the twenty years of its existence, New York City's annual Spanish Cinema Now series has come to serve as the American showcase for vibrant, thought-provoking films in Spanish cinema. A new generation of comic filmmakers first met American audiences with our longest-running series at Film Society of Lincoln Center: Alex de la Iglesias, Santiago Segura, Ventura Pons, and Daniel Sanchez Arevalo, among others. Female directors, such as Iciar Bolain, Gracia Querejta, Helena Taberna and Isabel Coixet, have been prominently featured, as have the new approaches to classic genres as seen in the films of Nacho Vigalondo, Jaume Balaguer, and Javier Gutierrez. Spanish Cinema Now has also provided the occasion for retrospective homages to artists ranging from directors Carlos Saura, Victor Erice and Manuel Gutierrez Aragon to actors such as Javier Bardem and Javier Camera.

Back in the Eighties, before I was working at Lincoln Center, I would come to New York from Chicago (where I was living) to attend Spanish film week organized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. My good friend, Carmelo Romero, head of international film promotion for the Ministry in those years, organized these shows, which took place in various cinemas around town that had been rented for the occasion. After I got my Lincoln Center job, I told Carmelo that as soon as our new cinema--a place that was to be called the Walter Reade Theater--would be up and running, I'd be delighted to host the Spanish film week. We made a date to have our first collaboration in the fall of 1989, just after the Walter Reade was scheduled to open (September 1989).

New York building projects being what they are, the Walter Reade didn't open in fact until December 1991, but every time I saw Carmelo I'd renew my promise. Finally, after some negotiation, we agreed on October 1992, to be the launch of our first series. Dramatically titled "Out of the Ashes," this first Lincoln Center Spanish show proved a great success, introducing audiences to films such as Bogas Luna's JAMON JAMON (as well as to Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in that film), and Carlos Saura's marvelous dance film SEVILLANAS. Encouraged, we decided we'd repeat our collaboration the next year, only we'd move the series into early December, and it's remained there ever since.

Together, Spanish cinema and the Film Society have taken quite a journey. When the series began in 1992, Spanish cinema was at a particularly low point: production was down to 40 films a year (down from highs of almost 200 in the Seventies), and Spanish cinema could not even claim ten percent of its domestic box office. The older, established generation of filmmakers had perhaps lost touch with Spanish audiences, especially younger audiences; raised in the shadow of Franco, this generation of filmmakers specialized in a somewhat closed, allegorical cinema, used as it was to hiding messages and themes from the censors. Yet the new generation was all about openness, about putting it out there, and there was no greater symbol of this than the one Spanish filmmaker who continued to enjoy growing international success in these years: Pedro Almod?var, who once went so far as to claim that he made films "as if Franco had never existed."

In the twenty years since the founding of Spanish Cinema Now (Film Society of Lincoln Center's longest-running series), Spanish Cinema has continued to struggle to both maintain its domestic box office as well as to establish expanded markets around the world, yet there can be little doubt of its importance today--both as a source for talented directors and actors, as well as one of the most aesthetically provocative cinema anywhere.

We're proud to be a small part of this cinematic renaissance, and are grateful to Spanish cinema for all the pleasure it continues to give our audiences.

Film Society of Lincoln Center's Spanish Cinema Now series is currently celebrating 20 years with an exciting lineup of films, shorts, documentaries and a tribute to the late great director Luis Garc?a Berlanga, all currently playing at Walter Reade Theater until December 22. Visit www.filmlinc.com for schedule, tickets and information.

Mexico says captured cartel leader had arsenal (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities said Tuesday that an alleged founder of the Zetas drug cartel had an arsenal of 169 guns when he was captured Monday, and may have been linked to the abduction of nine Mexican marines.

Navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara said suspect Raul Lucio Hernandez Lechuga oversaw Zeta operations around the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, where nine marines disappeared earlier this year.

Vergara said a suspect was killed and a marine wounded in a firefight that erupted during Hernandez Lechuga's capture Monday in the Veracruz state city of Cordoba. The bust was the result of a yearlong intelligence operation, Vergara said.

Marines found 133 rifles, five grenade launchers, 29 grenades and 36 pistols at the scene of the raid near a highway. Marines also found bulletproof vests with the letter "Z", the zetas symbol, on the front.

Vergara said Hernandez Lechuga was one of Mexico's 37 most-wanted drug traffickers, and that with his arrest, 22 of those 37 have either been killed or detained.

The Zetas have been linked to some of the apparent abductions of Mexican marines, but Vergara didn't say what specific evidence authorities had of Hernandez Lechuga's involvement in the cases.

The apparent abductions of Mexican navy personnel have been shrouded in mystery, with the navy previously acknowledging that three marines and a navy cadet were abducted by suspected drug cartel gunmen in August in Veracruz, the state's largest city.

Later that month, the navy said it had found four bodies in a pit on the outskirts of Veracruz city, and that the remains might be those of the missing marines, but it never publicly confirmed that was the case.

At a Tuesday press conference where Hernandez Lechuga and four alleged associates were paraded before the media, Vergara said a total of nine marines had disappeared, but didn't say whether any of them had been found.

Mexican drug cartels have kidnapped and killed military personnel before, but such incidents remain relatively rare.

Hernandez Lechuga was the leader of the Zetas in about 10 states, including Veracruz. The federal government had offered a reward of 15 million pesos, or about $1.2 million, for information leading to his arrest. Vergara said the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration was also offering a $1 million reward for Hernandez Lechuga, known by the nickname "Lucky."

The Zetas organization was formed by a small group of elite soldiers based in Tamaulipas state, across the border from Texas, who deserted to work for the Gulf drug cartel in the 1990s.

The Zetas split from their former allies in the Gulf cartel last year, setting off bloody fights throughout Mexico as they sought to expand south.

In Veracruz, the Zetas are currently believed to be locked in a bloody turf battle with groups allied with the Sinaloa cartel.

Steroids May Boost Survival for Very Preemie Babies (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Dec. 6 (HealthDay News) -- Giving steroids to pregnant women at risk for preterm birth as early as 23 weeks during their pregnancy may boost an infant's overall chance of survival and reduce the baby's risk of serious developmental issues, including brain injury, a new study says.

The study, published in the Dec. 7 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, is potentially significant, according to experts who are not affiliated with the study.

Current guidelines suggest administering prenatal steroids to women who are at risk for delivering between the 24th and 34th week of their pregnancy, but make no recommendations about what to do if women show signs of labor before week 24. Most "full-term" babies are born between 38 and 42 weeks. Steroids help the infants' lungs develop and this increases survival rates and lowers their risk of brain injury.

The new study provides some much-needed clarity for mothers and doctors of babies who are born at 23 weeks.

"When given as early as 23 weeks, prenatal or antenatal steroids reduce an infant's risk of death and important developmental issues," said study author Dr. Wally Carlo, director of the division of neonatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In the absence of clear guidelines, standard practice varies widely, he said. In the study, around 40 percent of women who showed signs of preterm labor at 23 weeks were not treated with steroids. "There is a huge potential to increase the use of prenatal steroids," he said. "Mothers need to know that there is a lot that physicians can do to improve the outcome for these babies."

The new study included about 10,500 infants born at 23 medical centers between January 1993 and January 2008 at 22 to 25 weeks. These babies weighed shy of 2 pounds at birth. The study compared infants who received prenatal steroids to those who had not. The researchers also performed neurologic exams on more than 4,900 of the surviving infants at 18 to 22 months after their original due dates.

When steroids were given to moms during their 22nd to 23rd week of pregnancy, infants' risk of death decreased by more than 33 percent, and their risk of neurodevelopmental delays dropped by more than 20 percent, the study showed. Such neurodevelopmental delays may include blindness, hearing impairment, cerebral palsy or severe delays in motor and cognitive issues. The treatment worked across many subgroups of women, Carlo said. "Even one dose may have important effects," he noted.

This suggests that prenatal steroids work just as well in babies born at 23 weeks as they do in those born at 26 weeks.

Dr. Burton Rochelson, chief of maternal-fetal medicine at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, N.Y., called the new study findings "important" and "a big deal." This study "provides pretty convincing evidence that we can give these steroids to infants between 22 and 23 weeks of pregnancy," he said. "If it looks like you are going to deliver even as early as 23 weeks, you should have a discussion with your doctor and be offered corticosteroids."
