The MSU Persian Student Association hosted the International Coffee Hour to promote and celebrate the holiday typically celebrated at the winter solstice. Danyelle Morrow/The State News

Among all of the tables set out for the Office for International Students and Scholars, or OISS, weekly Coffee Hour, one table stuck out vividly among the rest.

While other tables offered different coffee varieties on simple black tablecloths, the Yalda table was festively decorated to reflect Persian traditions with purple and gold candles, and traditional food and drink such as pomegranate seeds, a specially-carved watermelon and Persian tea ? all set on decorative red, blue and gold fabrics.

?The difficult part was designing the watermelon, you see,? Persian Student Association president Fariborz Daneshvar said, who skyped with his family on the actual holiday ? the Persian equivalent of Thanksgiving ? which took place Dec. 21.

Daneshvar, along with roughly 70 other Iranian students at MSU, celebrated the holiday away from his family. While it was disheartening for Daneshvar to be so far from home, he said he was happy the OISS helped him celebrate his Iranian culture on campus.

In order to celebrate Yalda Night in the U.S., the Persian Student Association used the OISS? weekly Coffee Hour as a platform to showcase the holiday.

The event also shed a positive light on Iranian culture, which has been bogged down by negative stereotypes in the past, students at the event said.

?We are showing that we also have these nice things in our culture, and (we?re) showing this beauty and the history of Iran to MSU and other societies,? graduate student Soroor Soltani said. ?Maybe (we can change) all the wrong conceptions people have (about) Iran and try to bring out the nice things we do? the celebrations of culture.?

Ravi Ammigan, assistant director for the OISS, said fostering these types of discussions is the nature of the coffee hours, which take place 4-6 p.m. every Friday in Spartan Room B and C of the International Center.

When students walk in the door to the coffee hour, they are instructed to write down both their name and country of origin.

After grabbing cups of coffee, students naturally form circles and have discussions ? rarely does the same country show up on more than one name tag in each circle.

?We want it to be organic. Very rarely will we stop the energy in the room ? we want to build community,? Ammigan said.

News in Brief: Ancient human DNA suggests minimal interbreeding

Genetic analysis indicates Stone Age people mated infrequently with Neandertals and other close relatives

Genetic analysis indicates Stone Age people mated infrequently with Neandertals and other close relatives

By Bruce Bower

Web edition: January 21, 2013

A 40,000-year-old human skeleton previously excavated in China has yielded genetic clues to Stone Age evolution.

Ancient DNA from cell nuclei and maternally inherited mitochondria indicates that this individual belonged to a population that eventually gave rise to many present-day Asians and Native Americans, says a team led by Qiaomei Fu and Svante P??bo, evolutionary geneticists at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

The partial skeleton, unearthed in Tianyuan Cave near Beijing in 2003, carries roughly the same small proportions of Neandertal and Denisovan genes as living Asians do (SN: 8/25/12, p. 22), the scientists report online January 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Stone Age people and their close evolutionary relatives interbred infrequently, the researchers suspect. DNA analyses of additional human fossils from Asia and Europe are needed to illuminate how often cross-species flings occurred tens of thousands of years ago.

OECD educationtoday: What are the social benefits of education?

Elisabeth Villoutreix
Communications Officer, Directorate for Education The link between education and social benefits has long been recognised, as far back as Ancient Greece when Aristotle and Plato pointed out that education is central to the well-being of society. More recently, in the past few decades, research has supported this conventional wisdom, revealing that education not only enables individuals to perform better in the labour market, but also helps to improve their overall health, promote active citizenship and contain violence.

So how can education predict social outcomes such as life expectancy, civic engagement and general life satisfaction?

The latest issue of Education Indicators in Focus seeks to answer this question by comparing the social benefits of education in selected OECD countries.

Data show that life expectancy is strongly associated with education. On average, among 15 OECD countries with available data, a 30-year-old tertiary-educated man can expect to live eight years longer than a 30-year-old man who has not completed upper secondary education.

Data also show that adults who have attained higher levels of education are generally more likely than those with lower levels of educational attainment to report stronger civic engagement, in terms of voting, volunteering, political interest, and interpersonal trust.

Apart from raising ?income levels, education has the potential to help individuals develop skills, improve ?social status and gain access to networks that could lead to enhanced social outcomes. ?By fully recognising the power of education, policy makers could better address diverse societal challenges.

A town on Mali's frontline switches back and forth

The recent history of Diabaly calls into question the quality of?the Malian troops that are needed to hold on to such areas cleared by the French military intervention.

By Peter Tinti,?Correspondent / January 19, 2013

Malian soldiers guard an airbase used as a staging ground for French forces, Saturday. French airstrikes have dislodged rebels from the frontline town of Diabaly, a breakthrough in the conflict.

In a potential breakthrough for the fledgling campaign to drive Islamist rebels from their strongholds in Mali, French and Malian troops are poised to secure the town of Diabaly amid reports that rebel forces have abandoned the town. ?

The news comes in the wake of a virtual information blockade out of the city. Despite reports earlier this week suggesting heavy fighting between French ground troops and rebels who had embedded themselves within the population,?Diabaly residents say it was French airpower, not boots on the ground, that proved a decisive factor.

Residents on Friday expressed concern about the delay in ground forces arriving to secure the town. The recent history of Diabaly also calls into question the quality of?the Malian troops that are needed to hold on to such areas cleared by the French military intervention.

In less tenuous times, Diabaly was a nondescript hamlet in a part of Mali that aspired to be an agricultural oasis in the scorching climate of Africa?s Sahel. But the town of 35,000 took on a strategic significance when Islamist rebels took control just days after the French began bombing various locations in central and northern Mali. With Diabaly's fall, rebel forces had advanced to just 270 miles from the capital and France scrambled troops northward. ??

A full-scale ground war appeared just around the corner when French chief of staff Adm. Edouard Guillaud told Europe 1 television that ground troops would soon be??fighting directly,? against their Islamist adversaries. Diabaly, it seemed,?was destined to become a symbol for when a limited air campaign against specific targets became a more complicated endeavor.?

The exact details of what has transpired since are proving difficult to parse. While several media outlets have reported that heavy fighting took place between French ground troops and rebel forces within the city, several residents who fled the area for the nearby city of Niono told the Monitor that no fighting took place.

?We heard from some people on the outside that the French were here, but we never saw them,? said Assey Tour?, a 26 year old farmer who arrived at the checkpoint in Niono around 2:30 pm Friday, with three exhausted looking members of his extended family crammed on the back of his motorcycle.?

Mr. Tour? told the Monitor that the rebels started leaving the town around 8 a.m. that morning. ?Things are clam, and people are finally able to leave the village,? he said.

This information was confirmed by several residents, who trickled in on a variety of vehicles, including motorcycles, bush taxis, small busses, and even flatbeds affixed to farm equipment.

According to several eyewitness accounts, the rebels dispersed this morning in the direction of neighboring town Sokolo, pausing to bury their dead in accordance with Islam.

?There were some blacks among them, but most were whites,? said Diabaly resident Fatoumata Shonta, referring to the lighter skinned ethnic-Tuaregs and Arabs who make up a majority of the rebel ranks.

Another resident who fled Diabaly confirmed that the Islamists appear to have left in haste, confirming that they left ?grenades and rocket launchers? in the street.?

Ousman Tangara arrived in Niono in awe of the accuracy of French air strikes. ?It was the bombs that drove them out!? he exclaimed, ?the French can hit any car they want!?

Tangara said that when one aerial strike hit a rebel vehicle that was transporting munitions, the explosion ?shook the whole village? and it sounding like ?rain was falling on our houses? as the debris continued to fall from the sky for several minutes.

Tangara joined the chorus of Diabaly residents who wondered why French and Malian forces had not come to fill in the power vacuum left by the rebels. ?We want the army to come in and secure our village so that we can return to our homes,? he said, ?there is no time to wait.?

Malian soldiers have a notorious past in Diabaly, however. The town became a household name this past September when Malian forces killed at least 16 Mauritanian Islamic preachers there.

The incident sparked a flurry of accusations and speculation in local and regional press. The Malian military initially said that the preachers ??who were heading overland to Bamako for a religious conference ??had failed to stop at a checkpoint, at which point soldiers at the checkpoint identified the bearded men as Islamist rebels and opened fire on the convoy.

The official story was quickly exposed as a cover-up, as a survivor and other witnesses confirmed that the preachers had been removed from their vehicles at the checkpoint and summarily executed. The massacre prompted Mali?s foreign minister to fly to neighboring Mauritania to smooth relations, and served as yet another example of the lack of discipline in the Malian military.

George Orwell's 1984 Technology: How Close Are We to Big Brother?

Is George Orwell's 1984 view of the world really possible? Image by colindunn

Is George Orwell?s 1984 view of the world really possible? Image by colindunn

George Orwell?s novel,?Nineteen Eighty-Four was the idea behind the reality TV show Big Brother. The idea that the Government knows every move that you make is a scary prospect for many, even law-abiding citizens. So, is the technology used in the sinister classic novel a possibility in this day and age?

Nineteen Eighty-Four More Than Just CCTV

At first, when you consider the world of Nineteen Eighty-Four,?you might think of CCTV and surveillance cameras, but the technology used in the novel is more than just that. While using cameras to monitor crime could be viewed as Big Brother in action, both the U.S. and the U.K use it with the intent to help protect the community. The technology used in George Orwell?s tale actually includes two-way television screens that allow for communication. The screens never explicitly had cameras installed in them as the modern-day technology does; the communication was through the screen itself!

This type of technology has not been developed yet, but it is worth commenting that when the novel was written in 1949, technology had not advanced to what we know today. There were no personal computers, or Internet, and the most significant type of electronic technology most houses had was a radio. ?The screens described in George Orwell?s book must have been developed over time and would have gone through a process of upgrades, so it is likely that it all could have started from the video communication that we have right now.

Winston Smith?s Speakwrite

Winston Smith is the protagonist of the story and works as a copywriter for the London Times. His job is to make changes to history to suit the government?s needs, and he uses a ?Speakwrite? to help him with that. The device hears everything he says and then writes it down, word for word.

Today?s speech-to-text technology is getting closer to this, using a type of artificial intelligence called natural language processing. The downside of the software is that it needs to be trained to understand your voice, accent and dialect, and you still need to proofread everything it creates ? although the software does become more proficient at transcribing your words over time. As with the telescreens described above, the technology Orwell imagined must have grown from somewhere, and today?s voice-to-text software is one step in the right direction.

(AP) ? Jessica Chastain easily outmuscled Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mark Wahlberg over the weekend, topping the box office with both her supernatural horror film "Mama" and the Oscar-nominated Osama bin Laden hunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."

"Mama" opened well above expectations with a box-office topping $28.1 million for Universal Pictures, according to studio estimates Sunday. Chastain also held the second spot with "Zero Dark Thirty," for which she's nominated by the Academy Awards for best actress. In its second week of wide release, "Zero Dark Thirty" took in $17.6 million.

The films' strong performances had the remarkable effect of making Chastain an unlikely box-office queen out of a chameleon-like actress that even fans of "Mama" might have trouble picking out of a lineup. Chastain, whose credits range from Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" to "The Help" (for which she was also Oscar nominated), even accomplished the rare feat by besting a couple of more traditional box-office stalwarts.

Schwarzenegger's post-governorship comeback got off to a terrible start. His action flick "The Last Stand" opened with just $6.3 million for Lionsgate, one of the worst debuts for the brawny 65-year-old star. The film came in 10th.

Though Schwarzenegger co-starred in "The Expendables 2," which opened with $28.6 million in August, "The Last Stand" is his first proper starring vehicle since exiting the California governor's seat in January 2011.

The Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe-led New York crime film "Broken City" didn't fare much better. The Fox release premiered with $9.1 million.

Instead, audiences flocked to the PG-13-rated "Mama," which bore the imprimatur of the well-respected fantasy-spinner Guillermo Del Toro, a producer.

"Never underestimate the drawing power of a PG-13 horror film," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal Pictures, acknowledged the apparently limitless appetite for such a film, if done right: "That's why we did it," she said.

"It's a fun film without a lot of extraordinary violence," said Rocco, who added she would have been "thrilled" with a debut in the mid- to high-teens. "Young people like scary stuff."

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Hollywood will get a virtual four-day weekend at the box office. Universal is predicting "Mama" to finish with $33.2 million by the end of Monday.

Though horror films generally are a hit with male audiences, "Mama" appealed strongly to females, who made up 61 percent of its moviegoers. That was key on a weekend filled with male-driven movies, including "Broken City," ''The Last Stand," Warner Bros.' "Gangster Squad" and the Weinstein Co.'s "Django Unchained."

"It's an incredibly competitive marketplace for testosterone-driven films," said Dergarabedian.

The Weinstein Co.'s "Silver Linings Playbook," nominated for eight Academy Awards including best picture, expanded to its largest number of theaters in its 10th week of release. Playing in 2,523 theaters, a jump of 1,713 theaters, the David O. Russell film took in $11.4 million on the weekend ? the same in which its star Jennifer Lawrence hosted "Saturday Night Live" ? for a cumulative of $55.3 million.

Also nominated for best picture, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," in its fourth week became the director's biggest box-office hit. It surpassed his previous film, "Inglourious Basterds," by adding $8.2 million for a domestic total of $138.4 million.

Hundreds honor information activist Swartz in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hundreds of friends and supporters of Aaron Swartz gathered Saturday in New York City to pay tribute to the free-information activist and online prodigy who killed himself last week as he faced trial on hacking charges.

A hero to data-access advocates but a thief in the eyes of prosecutors, Swartz, 26, was found dead Jan. 11 in a suicide that has intensified debate over how authorities should treat hackers whose goal is to expand public knowledge, not make personal profits.

Friends remembered Swartz as a digital-age polymath and a crusader for the open exchange of information ? an "Internet saint," in the words of Quinn Norton, a journalist who writes about hacker and online culture.

Doc Searls, 65, a columnist and advocate for making computer code publicly accessible, said he met Swartz when the tech prodigy was a teenager and noted that the two "were often generational bookends at conferences we went to."

"When we're young we think our cause is a sprint, and when we're middle-aged we thing is it's a marathon," Searls said. "But when we're old we think it's a relay race. And Aaron was the one you wanted to hand it off to."

A grandson of activist folk singer Pete Seeger, Kitama Jackson, read a note from his grandfather that said: "These modern times are filled with such contradictions that experts are not agreed on what the future of the human race will be. But we can agree today that it was a tragedy for this brilliant young man to be so threatened that he hanged himself."

Swartz hanged himself in his apartment the month before he was to go on trial in Boston. Federal prosecutors accused him of breaking into a computer wiring closet at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010 and tapping into the university's computer network to get millions of paid-access scholarly articles, which he planned to make available for free.

Whatever he aimed to do with the data, "stealing is stealing, whether you use a computer command or a crowbar," Boston U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said before Swartz' death.

But his family, admirers and some legal experts blasted the case as overreaching that drove Swartz to his death. His father, Robert Swartz, has said his son "was killed by the government."

The digital archive that holds the articles, JSTOR, has said it regretted being drawn into the criminal case and didn't pursue any claims against Swartz after he returned the data in 2011. Days before his death, the nonprofit JSTOR announced that it planned to make more than 4.5 million articles available for free.

Swartz had pleaded not guilty to some 13 felony charges. They carried the potential for decades in prison and enormous fines, though prosecutors have said they never intended to seek the maximum penalties.

A shaken Ortiz said this week she was "terribly upset about what happened," appearing near tears at one point as she spoke about the case. But she said her office handled it fairly and appropriately.

Swartz was a young teenager when he helped create RSS, technology for gathering updates from blogs, news sites and elsewhere on the Web. He later co-founded the social news site Reddit and Demand Progress, a group that campaigns against online censorship.

Memorial speaker Glenn Otis Brown, director of business development at Twitter, remembered the precocious 15 or 16-year-old he met while working as the executive director of Creative Commons, which provides a way for people to license their code or online work for public use.

Swartz' role there was to translate legal software-licensing agreements into computer-readable code ? a job he peppered with humor, such as reframing the complex legal concepts as haikus. For example, "Public domain: Do what you feel like / Since the work is abandoned / the law doesn't care," or "If you touch this file / my lawyers will come kill you / so kindly refrain."

Brown recalled a blog post Swartz once wrote about spending 30 days offline: "I felt like I was in control of my life, instead of the other way around."

Four of BP's 18 Algeria gas plant staff still missing

LONDON (Reuters) - BP said on Saturday that 14 of its 18 employees at the In Amenas plant in Algeria were safe but the fate of the remaining four remained unknown as the hostage crisis there was drawing to a close.

"While not confirmed, tragically we have grave fears that we are likely to have suffered one or more casualties," said Bob Dudley, chief executive of the oil and gas giant, during a conference call with reporters.

"This was an unprovoked, violent assault by heavily armed murderers," he said.

The Algerian army carried out a dramatic final assault earlier on Saturday to end a siege of the desert plant by Islamic militants who attacked it on Wednesday. Details of casualties were still hazy.

Dudley declined to disclose the nationalities of the four employees still missing or of the 14 who were safe, but when a reporter brought up the name of American Mark Cobb, manager of the In Amenas joint venture, Dudley confirmed that Cobb was safe.

Two of the 14 employees who are safe sustained injuries but these were not life-threatening and the pair had already been flown out of Algeria, Dudley said.

"The information I've had from the Algerian energy ministry is that the active operation has been completed, that the terrorists had an intention of potentially destroying the entire facility and there are explosives and mines involved and it is being very systematically being walked through by the Algerian military," Dudley said.

OVER 25 NATIONALITIES

Dudley said that typically there were 500 to 700 people on site at the In Amenas plant, most of whom were Algerian. The minority of foreigners who worked there included citizens from more than 25 countries.

He said BP usually had around 20 people at In Amenas and 60 in the whole of Algeria.

The firm was in the process of evacuating non-essential staff from Algeria as a precautionary measure, he said, and 25 had already left.

Dudley said BP's intention was to return to normal operations in Algeria as soon as circumstances allowed.

He also said that BP was reviewing security at other installations in the region, but did not give any details.

Asked for details about how and when operations at In Amenas had been shut down, Dudley said that within three or four hours of the start of the attack on Wednesday BP had received a report that the gas wells had been isolated from the facility.

This meant the flow of gas to the facility was closed first, and then the vessels and processing equipment were vented down so there was no longer high-pressure in the plant, he said.

"What that meant is that there were a number of vessels that remained with liquid hydrocarbons in them throughout this event," Dudley said.

Green Blog: Drought Points Up Critical Role of Waterways

When people think of the Mississippi River, they might have visions of Mark Twain and old steamboats. But few Americans understand the vast amounts of shipping traffic that still makes its way up and down the river, part of the world?s largest navigable inland waterway.

As I write in The Times, a Midwestern drought has caused the dwindling of the mighty river in recent months. The phenomenon cannot necessarily be ascribed to climate change ? no individual weather event can be.

Still, shifting weather patterns, with heavier rainstorms in one area and much less in others, are part of the emerging picture of the effects of the overall global warming trend. Only a year ago, the river was seeing record flooding.

If drought does emerge as a more prominent facet of life on the Mississippi and navigation is impeded, the effect on national and even global commerce will undoubtedly be felt. The towboats pushing their tightly grouped clusters of barges up and down the river move billions of dollars a month worth of grain for export and fertilizer for Midwestern farmers, coal and fuel for power plants and many other items.

If the river got so low that navigation had to stop, grain exports and the other commodities could get a lot more expensive very quickly.

Barges, it turns out, are a remarkably efficient way to move goods along the Mississippi and its tributaries. The load aboard one fully loaded 15-barge tow, if transferred to a train, would require more than 200 rail cars. Try to move the goods by truck, and you?ll need a fleet of more than 1,000. And when the river is running well, tow boats might push 24 barges or even more. So by comparison with road or rail transport, the Mississippi is relatively green.

The looming crisis on the river has thrown a spotlight on the importance of water traffic to the national economy. Rick Calhoun, the president of Cargo Carriers, a part of Cargill, said that even President Obama, who has been talking up infrastructure investment in recent months, has referred chiefly to roads, railways and air ??even cyber infrastructure,? Mr. Calhoun complained. ?We don?t talk about the waterways.?

But as I note in my article, President Obama has begun taking a personal interest in the Mississippi issue. So Mr. Calhoun is hoping that another mode of transportation will finally get the love. ?We will consider it a coup if the president puts waterways in the State of the Union address,? he said.

From belief to betrayal: How America fell for Armstrong

In the wake of Lance Armstrong's admission to Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs, the World Anti-Doping Agency is telling the cyclist he must tell the truth under oath if he ever wants to return to competitive sports, and former friends and teammates agree. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The suspicions were there from the start. And so were the convincing denials.

In an early ad for Nike, Lance Armstrong met insinuations of doping head-on.

?This is my body and I can do whatever I want to it,? he says in the commercial, inspirational at the time but hollowly ironic now.

?I can push it, and study it, tweak it, listen to it,? he continues. ?Everybody wants to know what I?m on? I?m on my bike, busting my ass six hours a day. What are you on??

A YouTube video of Lance Armstrong's "What Are You On?" Nike commercial from 2001.

Armstrong?s astounding post-cancer comeback was still in its infancy when suggestions that he might not be clean surfaced with a report of steroids in his urine during his first Tour de France victory in 1999.

He rejected them with what would become the hallmarks of his many denials: a flash of anger, a complaint of persecution, a pointed reference to his status as a survivor.

?They say stress causes cancer," Armstrong said when confronted with the test result. "So if you want to avoid cancer, don't come to the Tour de France and wear the yellow jersey."

His explanation -- that saddle-sore cream had caused the trace positive -- apparently satisfied the sport?s governing body. The early whiff of scandal did not stop him from crossing the line on the Champs-Elysees that year ? or the next six.

With each victory, Armstrong?s riches and popularity grew until it seemed like half the country had a yellow Livestrong charity bracelet dangling from their wrists.

In 2005, a Gallup poll found 79 percent of people questioned had a favorable opinion of him. He made $17.5 million in endorsements that year and was engaged to singer Sheryl Crow.

Questions about whether he was using performance enhancers had been mounting by the year: a 2000 probe into a report that a team staffer was caught disposing of drugs, a 2004 French book that alleged Armstrong juiced, the 2006 confessions of former teammates who admitted doping.

Armstrong always responded the same way, with unequivocal denials and threats of legal action.

?I have never doped,? he told Larry King in 2005, sounding exasperated at having to repeat himself.

In a 2007 interview, he played the cancer card. ?I was on my death bed. You think I?m going to come back into a sport and say, 'OK, doctor, give me everything you got. I just want to go fast.' No way.?

He didn't dodge the accusations, he used them. His voiceover for a Nike ad during a 2009 comeback: "The critics say I'm arrogant. A doper. Washed up. A fraud. That I couldn't let it go. They can say whatever they want. I'm not back on my bike for them."

YouTube video of Lance Armstrong's 2009 "Driven" ad for Nike in which he notes that critics call him a "doper" and "a fraud."

There was no smoking-gun test result to refute him, and some of his critics were confessed liars.

A teammate?s wife who testified was dismissed as a harridan with a vendetta. Finger-pointing ex-teammate Floyd Landis was accused of ?harassment.? Even a federal investigation was branded ?un-American? by Armstrong?s lawyer.

The champion didn?t back down when the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency charged and suspended him in June, boasting that he had ?passed more than 500 drug tests and never failed one.?

'Witch hunt'
Even his one act of surrender ? his August announcement that he would not fight the agency's charges ? was tinged with defiance. The probe was a ?witch hunt,? the claims mere ?nonsense? and ?enough is enough,? he said.

Armstrong?s sponsors were abandoning him, but he still had ardent defenders. In a Newsweek cover story, sports writer Buzz Bissinger declared the cyclist ?a hero, one of the few we have left in a country virtually bereft of them.?

OWN via Getty Images

Lance Armstrong during his interview with Oprah Winfrey, which airs Thursday and Friday. The cyclist's historic run of Tour de France championships made headlines, as did his fall from grace after being stripped of the titles in 2012.

The tide of public opinion had clearly turned, though. A couple of weeks after USADA released its damning report on Oct. 10, a Seton Hall Sports Poll found only a third of the respondents had a positive opinion of Armstrong.

This week's confession to Oprah Winfrey may be a bid to recoup some of the goodwill he once enjoyed and salvage his legacy, but the Johnny-come-lately reversal could backfire. Those who continued to back Armstrong even as the evidence became harder to ignore are as likely to feel betrayal as sympathy.

Count Bissinger among them.

?He is an immoral, manipulative liar who doesn?t deserve a second more of anybody?s time,? he wrote on the Daily Beast this week, asking readers not to watch the interview that airs Thursday and Friday.

?Don?t continue to feed his insufferable ego. Don?t give him the satisfaction. Let him be what he has become: Unimportant and worthless.?

Tune in to TODAY Friday for an exclusive live interview with Livestrong CEO Doug Ulman.?

US factory output rises for 2nd straight month

(AP) ? U.S. factory production rose in December for the second straight month, buoyed by more output of autos, electronics and business equipment.

The Federal Reserve said Wednesday that factory output increased 0.8 percent last month compared with November. That followed a 1.3 percent rise in November, which partly reflected a rebound from Superstorm Sandy.

Total industrial production increased 0.3 percent in December from November. That followed a 1 percent rise in November. Production slowed last month mostly because utility output dropped 4.8 percent, reflecting unseasonably warm weather.

Factory output is the most important component of industrial production. The back-to-back gains offered some hope that manufacturing could be picking up after struggling through most of 2012.

Many factories have been hurt by a slowdown in consumer spending and weaker global growth that has dampened demand for U.S. exports.

One exception has been U.S. auto companies, which boosted production sharply last year to meet the best sales since 2007. December was no different: Production of autos and motor vehicle parts rose 2.6 percent. And analysts are forecasting that Americans will buy even more cars and trucks in 2013.

There have been a few other encouraging signs that factories may be recovering from their slump.

The Institute for Supply Management's closely watched index of manufacturing activity rose to a level that signaled growth in December. And manufacturers added 25,000 jobs last month ? the best hiring spree for the sector since May.

Economists believe manufacturing could also get a boost from stronger business investment, provided that Congress raises the federal borrowing limit without a fight that damages business confidence. Companies are sitting on large amounts of cash. Analysts believe many are poised to start spending this year on computers, machinery and equipment to expand and modernize their operations.

The overall economy grew at an annual rate of 3.1 percent in the July-September quarter. But analysts believe activity slowed considerably in the October-December quarter to a rate below 2 percent or less, in part because companies cut back on restocking.

Less restocking leads to slower factory production, which weighs on economic growth.

PCB weighs golf cart parking

Published: Monday, January 14, 2013 at 21:01 PM.

?

PANAMA CITYBEACH ? The Panama City Beach Planning Board knocked down a proposal Monday to give beach businesses incentives for offering specified parking for golf carts.

While the city offers businesses an option to reduce the number of vehicular parking spaces required if they provide additional bicycle parking, the planning board ultimately decided there was not a need for specified golf cart parking.

The request to explore the idea came from the Panama City Beach City Council after the council approved expanding incentives for bicycle parking citywide. They previously were offered only for the Front Beach Road area.

The city allows businesses to reduce the required vehicular parking by no more than 5 percent if enough bike parking is provided. Mel Leonard, director of the city?s building department, presented to the Planning Board a proposal to consider allowing businesses to reduce vehicular parking by up to 7 percent by providing a combination of bike and golf cart parking.

Because providing bicycle parking is required, Leonard said making golf cart parking mandatory was also an option for the board to consider, but it would be complicated because not all businesses can be accessed by golf cart.

Golf carts are permitted to operate on city streets within Panama CityBeach limits as long as the operator has a valid driver?s license and adheres to safety regulations. To operate on city streets, golf carts do not need to be licensed.

Unregistered golf carts are not permitted on state roads, including Front, Middle or Back Beach Roads, Thomas Drive and South Thomas Drive, North Lagoon Drive, State 79, Churchwell Drive, Richard Jackson Boulevard, Alf Coleman Road, Clara Avenue, Hill Road, Beach Boulevard and Powell Adams Road.

Despite the restrictions, Leonard said many Panama CityBeach businesses are still accessible by golf cart.

?I like the idea of it, but I think it?s a bit premature,? said board member Craig Duran, who suggested the board might look into special parking spots for motorcycles, mopeds and electric cars.?

Board member Clair Pease said that with a parking problem in Panama CityBeach already, she didn?t think businesses should be allowed to further reduce their parking spaces.

The board voted unanimously to leave the parking code as is and revisit it a future date if golf cart parking becomes an issue in the area.?

Florida FWC to Improve Boating Safety in Volusia County, Manatee Protection in Flagler County

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will begin work this month to install waterway markers for a new boating safety zone at Highbridge Road in Volusia County.

The zone requires that boats operate at ?slow speed, minimum wake,? meaning that boats are fully off-plane, completely settled in the water and making little or no wake.

?We want to slow down vessel traffic in areas where public safety is a concern,? said Capt. Chris Roszkowiak of FWC?s Division of Law Enforcement. ?Clearly marked zones keep everyone informed to increase safety.

?Officers will begin by educating boaters on the new zones,? Roszkowiak said.

Work beginning this month also includes installing waterway markers for new seasonal manatee protection zones in Flagler County. Those zones are in effect from May 1 through Sept. 7 each year.

Crews will also be conducting needed maintenance and repairs to the markers in Flagler County at the State Road 100 Bridge in Flagler Beach.

The FWC worked with stakeholders in 2011 before voting in February 2012 to amend Florida Administrative Code Rule 68D-24.164, reducing vessel speed limits in the Intracoastal Waterway surrounding Highbridge Road Bridge in Ormond Beach. The manatee protection zones were approved by the FWC at its May 2012 meeting in Crystal River.

Boaters should use caution around construction crews installing the new markers. The construction is anticipated to conclude mid-March.

How California?s Online Education Pilot Will End College As We Know It

collegeToday, the largest university system in the world, the California State University system, announced a pilot for $150 lower-division online courses at one its campuses--a move that spells the end of higher education as we know it. Lower division courses are the financial backbone of many part-time faculty and departments (especially the humanities). As someone who has taught large courses at a University of California, I can assure readers that my job could have easily been automated. Most of college--the expansive campuses and large lecture halls--will crumble into ghost towns as budget-strapped schools hurd students online.

Recycling Can Actually Be Fun With a Paper Towel Tube Building Set

Is the Way to Your Man's Heart Killing Him? | Black and Married With ...

Documentary

by MartineF ?|? on January 14th, 2013 ?|?

Photo Credit: Jen SFO-BCN via Flickr

We?ve all heard the old adage that the way to a man?s heart is through his stomach. Based on my observations, this adage definitely carries some serious weight (pun intended). Sure, things have changed, and not knowing how to cook isn?t a deal-breaker for most men these days, but if a woman does know how to cook, her man certainly isn?t complaining. As a matter of fact, he?s probably as happy as can be.

Eating is an essential part of life. Now, what we eat ? well, that is a completely different story. As much as mac & cheese, cornbread, and fried chicken taste good, it?s tough to argue that they are essential to our diet. Yet, no one can argue that a good plate of soul food does just as much for the soul as it does for the stomach. Soul food often comes with satisfaction and comfort, and there is no denying that. What happens though, when our love for soul food puts us in danger by jeopardizing our health? How do we change our recipes? Because, even though they please everyone in our home, our doctors aren?t crazy about what we are having for dinner? How do we tell our men that we definitely want to find the way to their hearts, but it just can?t be through food?

Soul Food Junkies, created by Byron Hurt, is a documentary that looks at the historical and culinary roots of our beloved soul food. The film interviews doctors, cooks, historians, and everyday people in an attempt to bring light to the root of soul food, while also bringing attention to what these satisfying dishes are doing to our communities. Soul food carries some advantages, but those have to be weighed against the disadvantages, and this film takes a look at that reality.

Creating Soul Food Junkies was truly a labor of love for Hurt since his inspiration to create the film came from watching his father lose his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2007. Even after Hurt?s father became aware of his diagnosis, it still took quite some time for him to change his eating habits, and once he did it was too late. How many of us see this happen in our communities everyday? It begs the question?? with the prevalence of heart disease and hypertension in the black community, is someone?s life worth a piece of fried chicken?

Food brings families together. Some of the best moments in my life happen right in my kitchen. However, I am realizing more and more that just because something provides comfort doesn?t mean it?s good for you. Comfort can come with a price. Maybe we can prepare soul food less often? Maybe we can create healthier versions of our favorites? I am sure the solution is different for everyone, but the end result should be the same?? taking better care of ourselves and the ones we love.

Food tastes best when it?s made with love, but it would probably serve us all to remember that loving ourselves comes before loving whatever is on our plates. There are surely many ways to your man?s (and family?s) heart, and food does not have to be one of them.

Soul Food Junkies premieres on PBS today, January 14th. Check your local listings for the exact date and time in your area.

Will you be tuning in to watch Soul Food Junkies?

Alternative medicine use high among children with chronic conditions

Jan. 14, 2013 ? Children who regularly see specialists for chronic medical conditions are also using complementary medicine at a high rate, demonstrates recently published research from the University of Alberta and the University of Ottawa.

About 71 per cent of pediatric patients attending various specialty clinics at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton used alternative medicine, while the rate of use at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa was 42 per cent. Nearly 20 per cent of the families who took part in the study said they never told their physician or pharmacist about concurrently using prescription and alternative medicine.

Sunita Vohra, a researcher with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the U of A, was the lead investigator on the study, which was recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Pediatrics. Her co-investigator was W. James King from the University of Ottawa.

"The children in this study are often given prescription medicines," says Vohra, a pediatrician who works in the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Public Health at the U of A.

"And many of these children used complementary therapies at the same time or instead of taking prescription medicine. We asked families if they would like to talk about the use of alternative medicine, more than 80 per cent of them said, 'yes, please.'

"Right now, these families are getting information about alternative medicine from friends, family and the Internet, but a key place they should be getting this information from is their doctor or another member of their health-care team, who would know about possible drug interactions with prescription medicines." Vohra said the study "identified a gap in communications" in dealing with pediatric patients and their families.

"It's important to get these conversations going with every patient, especially when you consider it's not widely recognized how common it is for children with chronic illnesses to use alternative medicine," says the Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions scholar.

"We need to make sure these families are comfortable telling their specialists they are taking other therapies," she said. Right now, Vohra and her colleagues at the U of A have developed curricula for undergraduate medical students about the use of alternative medicine by pediatric patients, which is considered innovative and novel. Ensuring medical students receive information about alternative medicine is key because it arms them with more knowledge about potential interactions with prescription medicine, says Vohra.

"Considering parents are saying they want this information, we have an obligation to ensure future physicians have the education and resources they need for these conversations," Vohra says.
