Private jet crashes into Indiana neighborhood, two dead

(Reuters) - A private jet crashed into several homes while trying to land at an airport in northern Indiana on Sunday, killing two people and injuring three others, officials said.

The pilot of the Beechcraft Premier 1 reported experiencing electrical problems and made repeated approaches to land at the airport in South Bend before the jet stalled and crashed, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory.

The jet took off from Tulsa, Oklahoma, she said.

It was not immediately clear if those killed were aboard the plane or on the ground, said Captain Philip Trent, a spokesman for the South Bend Police Department. The jet was carrying four passengers at the time of the accident, he said.

The plane clipped at least one house and damaged two others, Trent said.

"There was large fuel discharge that caused an evacuation" in the area after the crash, he added.

Pictures of the plane showed it lodged inside a house. "The fuselage and the cockpit of the plane are embedded in a residence which is structurally unsound," Trent said.

No. 9 Miami beats NC State 81-71 in ACC semifinals

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? Durand Scott knocked down the shots to turn away North Carolina State's best pushes, and Shane Larkin provided the steady floor leadership that kept ninth-ranked Miami in control.

The backcourt that guided the Hurricanes to their first Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship now has them positioned to add the tournament title, too.

Scott scored a career-high 32 points to help the Hurricanes beat the Wolfpack 81-71 on Saturday in the ACC semifinals, earning the program's first trip to the final.

Larkin added 23 for the top-seeded Hurricanes (26-6), who before Saturday had reached the ACC semifinals just once before ? as a No. 12 seed making a surprise run before falling to eventual national champion Duke in 2010. Now they're heading to Sunday's final to face third-seeded North Carolina, which beat Maryland in the other semifinal.

"We're a very hungry team, and we want more and more," Larkin said. "We're not satisfied with winning the regular season. We want the ACC championship, and then eventually we want to make the national championship game. We're hungry, and we're not going to settle for anything less."

Miami led all day and by 19 points late in the first half against the fifth-seeded Wolfpack (24-10), who got within six after halftime but couldn't dig out of that big hole.

Scott had a lot to do with that. The senior guard went 12 for 18 from the field and 5 for 8 from 3-point range to keep draining the energy from a home-state crowd wearing plenty of red.

Scott scored 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting as a freshman in the 2010 semifinal loss to the Blue Devils, then turned in an even bigger performance in the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday.

"When I walk into this building, there's a lot of security guards, a lot of media people, a lot of people that work for the ACC ? I think they remember me," Scott said. "They always come up to me like, 'You remember this building and how (you did) your freshman year' and things like that. ... But I just tell them that was the past. That game can't win us the game today, yesterday or tomorrow. I've just got to go out there and do what I need to do for my team to win, and that's what I did tonight."

Scott scored 19 points in the first half, the last coming on two free throws for Miami's biggest lead at 39-20. N.C. State cut the deficit to 12 at half then 50-44 on Scott Wood's 3-pointer with 12 minutes left to re-energize a crowd that had gone silent with Miami's early dominance.

But Scott answered with a straightaway 3, holding his release long after the ball swished through the net. Then Larkin banked in a pullup shot to push the margin back to double figures.

Scott did it again a few minutes later, hitting a 3 over freshman Rodney Purvis as the shot clock wound down then holding his form again as the Hurricanes went up 13 with 7? minutes left. That was his last basket before fouling out with 1:53 left.

"I think at the start I didn't do a good enough job of pressuring him," Wood said. "I think we kind of let him kind of get in his comfort zone and ... for any player, once they see a couple of shots go down, they're tough to guard."

The Wolfpack twice more got the deficit to single digits in the final 2 minutes, but Larkin hit four straight free throws to answer those baskets then rebounded C.J. Leslie's missed jumper that signaled an end to the Wolfpack's run.

"I thought we turned it around in the second half," N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. "But we were just in too big of a hole and they were pretty good as far as holding us off."

Wood scored 21 points, hitting six 3s, to lead N.C. State, which was in the semifinals for the second straight season. But Gottfried's team ran into a No. 1 seed each time that denied the Wolfpack a chance at the program's first tournament title since 1987 under Jim Valvano.

Miami won the only regular-season meeting 79-78 on Reggie Johnson's tip-in with 0.8 seconds left with point guard Lorenzo Brown out with an ankle injury.

Brown was back to drive the Wolfpack's transition attack this time, but finished with six points on 0-for-6 shooting with five turnovers. N.C. State shot 57 percent after halftime and 50 percent for the game, but went scoreless for the first 5? minutes to set a bad tone for the day.

Miami also controlled the boards to score 18 second-chance points to go with 15 points off turnovers.

A Look at Entertainment

???? MJacksonMJ?s Family?s Suit

Michael Jackson?s family?s lawsuit against concert promoter AEG got a huge boost recently when a Los Angeles judge ruled that the family?s lawyers have enough evidence for the wrongful death suit after the Jackson legal team presented an email showing that AEG has supervised Conrad Murray, the doctor who in November 2011 was found guilty of administering a fatal dose of the hospital anesthetic propofol and sedatives to the singer, which played a key role in his death.

The Jacksons are claiming that AEG put pressure on Murray to make sure the star was ready to perform for his ?This Is It? comeback tour in 2009, despite his fatigued condition. AEG said it should not be held responsible for Jackson?s death, arguing that Murray did not work for the company but was hired by Jackson himself, and that the promotion company could not have foreseen the doctor?s administering of propofol and other drugs.

The ?smoking gun? here is the email between Paul Gongaware, AEG Live?s co-CEO and This Is It concert director Kenny Ortega, which appeared to suggest that Murray could have lost his $150,000 a month job if he failed to make sure Jackson was ready for the tour and its rehearsals.

The email allegedly said: ?We want to remind [Murray] that it is AEG, not MJ, who is paying his salary. We want to remind him what is expected of him.?

?The truth about what happened to Michael, which AEG has tried to keep hidden from the public since the day Michael died, is finally emerging,? Jackson attorney Kevin Boyle told CNN. ?We look forward to the trial where the rest of the story will come to light.?

The case will go to jury trial in April and if found liable, AEG Live could be ordered to pay more that the company is worth ? estimated at $8 billion.

WHoustonWhitney Houston?s FBI Files

Newly released FBI Files on Whitney Houston revealed that the late pop icon once paid off extortionists who threatened to expose details about her relationships.

Officials released 128 pages worth of documents on March 4, including several fan letters and FBI paperwork regarding an extortion case that was closed without prosecution. The documents also indicated that Houston paid off the person who was demanding money.

In 1992, a letter marked ?extortion? by the Feds was sent to Houston?s Nippy Inc. offices in New Jersey in which a woman demanded that unless the R&B icon paid $100,000, ?certain details? of her private life would be revealed. A subsequent letter raised the price to $250,000 and claims to have ?intimate details? of Houston?s love life.

The FBI interviewed Houston, two lawyers, and her father, John Houston. The singer told the agents that she considered the woman as ?a friend? and did discuss her personal life with her.? According to the documents, Houston?s father sent the person a confidentiality agreement along with a sum of money, thus closing the case.
dennis-rodman-all-starsThe Worm and the Little Un

Former NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman, just back from visiting Korean leader Kim Jong Un, was escorted out of? New York?s Time Hotel on March 3 after spending hours at the Midtown hotel?s restaurant loudly telling anyone within earshot how the North Korean dictator is such a great guy.

?He was at the bar at Serafina for three hours,? a source told the New York Post. ?He kept saying what a nice guy Kim is, and how Kim just wants to talk to President Obama about basketball. He was waving around a signed copy of the dictator?s huge manifesto, telling everyone they should read it.?

The witness also added, ?Dennis was making a total jerk of himself. He wouldn?t leave, and he wouldn?t let anyone talk to him about shutting up, or what an oppressive country North Korea is. Eventually he had to leave the bar because the bartender was getting p__ off.?

Rodman visited the North Korean leader with members of the Harlem Globetrotters for an HBO series produced by VICE television. Since retiring, ?The Worm? has appeared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew and Sober House. He?s currently on Celebrity Apprentice.

MGayeMarvin?s Movie

After years of gestation and red tape by the bails, a biopic of Motown legend Marvin Gaye will finally be made.? But former Law and Order star Jesse L. Martin has replaced Lenny Kravitz in the title role.

Martin will play Gaye in the Julien Temple-produced Sexual Healing.

According to deadline.com, the film focuses on the time Gaye spent in Europe in the early 1980s, when the singer attempted to get his addictions in check and his career back on track with the help of British promoter Freddy Cousaert (played by Brendan Gleeson). Gaye was shot and killed by his father in April 1984.

The decision to replace Kravitz was a legal move. Marvin Gaye III, the late singer?s son, threatened legal action against the filmmakers.

nasHip-hop at the Kennedy Center

Hip Hop artist Nas will grace the Kennedy Center stage next year for the weeklong festival, ?One Mic: Hip Hop Culture Worldwide.? The center announced on March 5 that its 2014 hip hop fest will open with Nas rapping with musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra on music from his classic debut album, Illmatic. The festival will also feature Puerto Rican musicians Calle 13 and a graffiti exhibition.

A Kennedy Center spokesperson said, ?The mix of rap, DJ?ing and graffiti with more traditional arts at one of the nation?s busiest performing arts centers will make the year unique, Hip Hop is clearly something new and different for us. I think to do something very current is important. We?re trying to speak to many different audiences.?

The Kennedy Center is no stranger to creating music festivals. In the past, they have created festivals around gospel and country music.

howard-stern-lgAfter Leno?

If you believe the New York Post, NBC is grooming the legendary infamous shock jock to replace Jay Leno when his Tonight Show contract runs out next year.

Stern has been trying to show TV execs for years that he?s has what it takes to make it on TV. His gig on America?s Got Talent is huge in proving this ? especially when little kids know who he is, according to his wife, Beth.

?We were in a hotel and all these little kids recognize him now as the judge from America?s Got Talent. Usually, it?s their dads. Now, it?s screaming little kids. People are now seeing him for who he really is.?

Stern?s agent, Don Buchwald, said he won?t comment on clients and NBC?s new head of late night, Doug Vaughan, denies any validity to this rumor.

Why Local Retailers Should Be Using Open Graph - DeonDesigns.ca

Last November, Chris Sherman highlighted the findings of Forrester research in his ?article, Forrester Rates The Top Large Search Marketing Agencies. As Chris noted, the Forrester report asked and answered this question:

?What are the biggest search marketing challenges you expect to face in the next two years??

Today, I?m convinced the findings were not only accurate, they are especially relevant for retailers. Below are the top three challenges the report uncovered:

  1. Integrating search marketing with other marketing
  2. Understanding new search engine developments
  3. Measuring how search impacts your business? bottom line

?Biggest Search Marketing Challenges

First, let?s briefly review what?s happened in search over the past year or so.

Facebook Open Graph Search

On January 15, 2013, Facebook announced its Open Graph Search, and Danny wrote Up Close With Facebook Graph Search, introducing the search box and its initial capabilities.

Initially, I didn?t make the connection between search engine marketing, other retail marketing (couponing, loyalty programs, etc.), search engine developments/innovations and a retailer?s bottom line.

However, I?ve recently learned from Rio SEO that Facebook has been testing a few hidden, unknown features behind-the scenes. I?ll get into the details of these tests after a brief review of what led up to the situation we face in search today.

The New Meta Data That Matters

In June 2011, Google Webmaster Blog introduced Schema.org to create and support a common set of schemas for structured data markup on webpages.

In November 2011, Matt Cutts, referring to Rich Snippets (structured data), announced in? Google?s Inside Search blog:

?This change helps us choose more relevant text to use in snippets. As we improve our understanding of webpage structure, we are now more likely to pick text from the actual page content, and less likely to use text that is part of a header or menu.?

In November 2011, Webnodes released a test showing ?a 30% increase in organic search engine traffic to websites using microdata (structured markup) or similar technologies.? And, around the same time, Google announced its support for GoodRelations, which revealed ?there is preliminary evidence that search results with respective extensions (structured markup) get a 30% higher click-through-rate (CTR).?

In October 2012, SMX East NYC established the first Semantic SEO Track in the Agenda.

Within its first year, Schema.org had quintupled in size, exposing a labyrinth of detailed structured markup for Events, Health, Organizations, Persons, Places, Products and Reviews. The organization of schemas, a set of ?types,? each associated with a set of properties, are arranged in a hierarchy that only the most experienced semantic strategists could begin to figure out and properly implement (IMHO).

To give you an idea of the level of detail provided, and required, to properly label and code a ?Place,? here?s a small portion of a screenshot showing how a ?Place? gets filtered-down by ?type? to be labeled a ?City Hall? vs. a ?Church.?

?City Hall vs Church

Vocabularies Vs. Syntax

Then came the education curve. We all started learning the difference between vocabularies like Open Graph protocol and GoodRelations vs. syntax like RDFa and Schema.org (microdata). My good friend and colleague Barbara Starr enlightened me with the fact that ?they?re all basically a type of semantic markup.?

Say no more; I?m calling it ?semantic markup? from now on ? if that?s okay with you! Remember, I?m a marketing guy who likes to drive growth in organic search traffic and revenue, not a semantic strategist. A lot of SEOs were not initially getting it right at the time, as there were a lot of unknowns; however, for those who stuck with it ?payday is right around the corner.

SEO For Facebook Open Graph Search

Here?s where it gets interesting for me, and hopefully, you?ll see the value-add once we expose the bigger picture that we believe Facebook has in-mind and has been testing for the last two years.

As a consultant, I?m in touch with a lot of agencies and SEOs on a daily basis. One of my favorite (there are too many to list here), is an unknown, brilliant sales engineer and SEO Tyler Ludwig, who hangs his ultra-white-hat with Rio SEO, the software division of Covario.

I mention Tyler because he is the one who first told me about the test Rio is doing with Facebook , and he deserves the recognition, not me.

What you are about to see requires a little imagination because this is visionary work; it hasn?t been released or exposed yet. Based on what I?ve seen, I am certain Facebook will crush-it once they drop the other shoe.

Facebook Testing On Open Graph

You?re familiar with Facebook?s Open Graph Search, right? Here?s a screen shot from my Facebook OG search on a national sporting goods retailer. The search box is in the upper left corner of your Facebook page and it drops-down as list of search results.

?Sports Authority

In this case, the retailer has been taking part in a test where Bing is powering Facebook location map pages. Here?s how it works along with some of the preliminary findings.

The Open Graph protocol (new meta data) looks like this for a location landing page (this is what a retail store location landing page should look). I hope all top retailers have one, as many I?ve surveyed use sub-standard store locators and SEO gimmicks which will eventually go away.

?Facebook Maps powered by Bing

When users ?Like? a retailer?s store location landing page, Facebook automatically creates a Local ?Child Page? using structured data from the Open Graph protocol. Note the ?About? and ?Locations? Tabs near the bottom of page.

Sports Authority FB Page

Take a look at the ?About? page; Facebook and the retailer now have a method for using and updating business data, e.g., address, phone number, description, longitude/latitude, etc. Note Facebook links to the retailer?s store location landing page.

?About Page

Take a look at the ?Locations? page powered by Bing/Facebook; the retailer now has a method for using and updating business data, e.g., logo, address, phone number, longitude/latitude, etc. Note Facebook links directly to the retailer?s store location landing page.

Locations Page

The Takeaways

The white-hat SEO best practice checklist for retailers has grown significantly in the last few months as a result of tests like the above with Facebook and other tests conducted on sites properly coded with structured data and semantic markup.

And, guess what? Google likes it! The preliminary findings show a remarkable lift in organic traffic. Structured data is now accessible to machine-reading search engines, Web applications, in-car navigation systems, tablets, mobile devices, Apple maps, SIRI, Yelp maps, Linked Open Data and all computers!

Structured markup presents your verified business data to a Search Engine as if it were chocolate; they love it and eat it up! Search engines understand it and know how to aggregate it for a better user experience, and display it for a boost in your CTR.

Structured business data includes rich media video content, product reviews and ratings, location and contact information, business specialty details, special offers, product information, medical data? and the list goes on.

Getting back to the Forrester findings, the following appear to be critical path for retailers wanting to improve their bottom line in 2013:

  1. Integrate search marketing with other retail marketing activities
  2. Understand new search engine developments
  3. Measure how search impacts your bottom line

Pakistan's government resigns, smoothing way towards elections

This is the first time a democratic government has finished its term in the country, which has a history of coups.

Pakistan's?government passed a major milestone Saturday, with the parliament becoming the first democratically chosen body to finish its term in a country that has faced three military coups and persistent political turmoil.

But after years of militant attacks, worsening electricity blackouts and faltering economic growth, the political party that took office five years ago on a wave of sympathy following the assassination of iconic leader Benazir Bhutto will likely find it more difficult this time to win voters to its side.

Underscoring divisions, politicians failed to reach agreement on a caretaker government in time for the final session of parliament before new elections are held. The country's constitution calls for a vote within 60 days, although no date has yet been set.

RECOMMENDED:?How much do you know about Pakistan? Take this quiz.

Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who maintains his position in the meantime, hailed the peaceful transition as a success for his?Pakistan?People's Party,

"We have strengthened the foundations of democracy to such an extent that no one will be able to harm democracy in future," Ashraf said during a nearly hourlong televised address to the nation.

Ashraf portrayed the problems in the country as something inherited from the previous regime of ousted leader Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

One of the ruling party's main achievements has been its sheer survival ? no small feat in a country that has experienced three successful coups and many more unsuccessful ones.

President Asif Ali Zardari has shown a remarkable ability to hold together a warring coalition government whose members threaten to quit every few months or so. He's also managed a balance between the need for U.S. assistance amid a deteriorating relationship between the two countries and rising anti-American sentiment.

Washington needs?Pakistan's?help fighting al-Qaida and stabilizing neighboring Afghanistan, but a series of recent scandals have severely damaged ties. CIA contractor Raymond Davis shot and killed two Pakistani men in Lahore, the U.S. unilaterally killed Osama bin Laden in the city of Abbottabad and American forces accidentally killed 24 Pakistani troops along the Afghan border.

"That the government has survived five years, despite rumors every three months that the government is going, should also be viewed as a kind of achievement," independent political analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi said.

Zardari and the ruling party must share some of the credit. The army, traditionally eager to step in when they perceive?Pakistan?to be in crisis, has shown a reticence under Army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, to involve itself at least outwardly in politics.

The main opposition party,?Pakistan?Muslim League-N led by Nawaz Sharif, has bypassed numerous opportunities to make life difficult for the PPP. Sharif has just as much invested in strengthening the civilian government as the PPP does, and is no friend of the army.

Sharif's party and one led by former Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan will present the greatest challenge to the PPP in the coming election.

The government's most high-profile accomplishments in the past five years have involved changing the power structure, rather than dealing with basic problems facing ordinary Pakistanis.

Through a constitutional amendment passed in 2010 under pressure from the opposition, Zardari followed through on promises to strip the presidency of many of the powers it gained under Musharraf.

The amendment prevents the president from unilaterally dissolving parliament and gives the prime minister a major role in appointing the country's armed services chiefs. The amendment also transfers considerable powers from the central government to the provinces.

But it's questionable whether these moves will deliver many votes. It's mostly the economy that will be on voters' minds.

The ?common sense? notion that capital income taxes hinder growth seems to be more a case of the latter.

Long term capital gains are taxed only when the asset is sold and at roughly half the rate on wages and salaries. Dare to suggest that the rate on investment profits could be raised a bit?so that perhaps the rate on labor income could lowered?and you?re liable to be reprimanded for failing to understand something as plain as the nose on your face: To tax capital income is to tax the reward for saving and thus to discourage saving. Less saving means less investment and less investment means slower growth, fewer jobs, and lower wages.

Everyone knows that.

Everyone, that is, except the people who study the issue.

Economic theory teaches that the impact of capital income taxes on savings is robustly ambiguous. Empirical research has yielded mixed results, but overall the data seem to indicate that reducing capital income taxes decreases rather than increases savings. In addition, lowering capital income taxes is likely to go hand in hand with raising labor income taxes or government borrowing, both of which are arguably at least as harmful to growth as capital income taxation.

I step through these points in a recent Wharton policy brief. Here?s a brief of the brief:

Notwithstanding the common sense story that taxing the reward for saving reduces it, the effect of capital income taxes on savings is theoretically indeterminate. There are several sources of indeterminacy. Here is one:

Suppose that you?re putting money away for retirement and Congress increases taxes on what you earn from that savings. There are two countervailing effects on how much you save. First, every future dollar of retirement consumption now requires additional savings?to pay the additional future tax. Second, you?ll probably plan to spend fewer future dollars on retirement consumption?because it?s become in effect more expensive. Whether, in the end, you save more or less depends on whether the first effect is greater or less than the second.

What then do the data say? Econometricians have taken several different approaches, and findings vary. On balance, however, the empirical literature seems to lend greater support to the view that capital income taxes increase rather than decrease savings.

Some of the best empirical research, for example, focuses on estimating a key parameter of individual choice called the ?intertemporal elasticity of substitution?. Applied to the retirement savings story told above, the bulk of estimates for this parameter support the conclusion that the first effect dominates, and retirement savings increase in response to greater capital income taxation.

But even if one could support the claim that capital income taxes?considered in isolation?hinder growth, that would not be enough. Capital income taxes aren?t set in a vacuum. Lower capital income taxes mean higher labor income taxes or additional government borrowing. (Yes, capital income tax reductions could be offset with spending cuts. But that just begs the question of why such cuts aren?t instead being used to reduce labor income taxes or borrowing .) Thus, to make the case against capital income taxes, one has to argue not just that such taxes hinder growth, but that they hinder growth more than labor income taxes and government borrowing.

That?s not an easy task.

Government borrowing is generally thought to crowd out private investment. CBO, for example, posits that each dollar of government borrowing reduces domestic investment by anywhere from 10 to 50 cents.

And although existing research is not definitive, there are valid reasons to believe that labor income taxes are at least as likely to reduce savings as capital income taxes. Consider, for example, that in the retirement savings story, labor income taxes have only the second, savings-reducing effect. Like capital income taxes, they reduce planned future consumption by making it more expensive (in this case, in terms of ?leisure?). Unlike capital income taxes, however, they do not increase the number of current dollars that must be saved per dollar of future consumption.

In short, trying to spur growth by keeping capital income taxes low seems?at best?like trying to fix one side of the roof with shingles from the other.

12 candidates for Syrian rebel interim premier

BEIRUT (AP) ? Twelve candidates are running for interim prime minister of a government to rule rebel-controlled areas in Syria, the country's main opposition group said Sunday.

The Western-backed Syrian National Coalition is set to elect the prime minister this week at a gathering of in Istanbul, Turkey.

The opposition, still largely based in exile, first raised the idea of an interim government months ago. Divisions among opposition figures caused repeated delays in forming it.

The latest effort to set up a government in the rebel-held areas comes after two full years of conflict in Syria.

In recent months, rebels have seized additional territory and now control large swaths of northern and eastern Syria. President Bashar Assad and his loyalists have successfully defended regime strongholds, including the capital, Damascus.

State institutions have all but collapsed in rebel-held areas, leaving many communities to fend for themselves with little electricity and sometimes no running water.

Supporters of an interim government say it could help restore order in rebel-held territories, including the northern city of Raqqa and parts of Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Others have warned that such a move is premature and that an opposition-run government would cement Syria's fragmentation.

There is also concern that Islamist militias would not recognize the authority of an interim government. Many of the senior figures in the Syrian National Coalition live in exile, and might have difficulties asserting their authority in Syria.

After disagreements and delays, the Istanbul conference is set to begin Monday. The vote for prime minister is to be completed by Tuesday, said Khalid Saleh, a Turkey-based opposition spokesman.

Most of the candidates are technocrats, he said. He said they include Ghassan Hitto, an IT manager who recently moved from Dallas, Texas, to southern Turkey; Osama Kadi, an economist from London, Ontario; Assad Asheq Mustafa, a former Syrian agriculture minister, and Walid Al Zoabi, a Dubai businessman.

He said two of the names were not released because the candidates live in government-controlled areas in Syria.

The list could be whittled down before Tuesday's votes, as some of those nominated may decide not to run, he said.

The Syria conflict began two years ago, initially as a largely peaceful uprising against Assad.

In response to a brutal regime crackdown, protesters took up arms, and by last summer, the insurgency turned into a civil war. The U.N. estimates that 70,000 Syrians have been killed and that 4 million of the country's 22 million people have been displaced.

Egyptians in south clash over president's visit

CAIRO (AP) ? Police have fired tear gas to disperse thousands of supports and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi during clashes over his visit to a southern Egyptian city.

Morsi was in Sohag on Saturday to launch a housing project and new education complex when thousands of protesters tried to storm the hall where he was meeting with officials.

Supporters of Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, chanted inside a hall where he delivered a speech, saying they would sacrifice their lives in support of the president.

Proponents and opponents clashed outside the hall, prompting police to fire tear gas to break up the two sides.

The state-run Ahram news website said student protests and a boycott by professors forced Morsi to cancel his visit to the university in Sohag.

SimCity

Every elected leader faces unexpected challenges upon assuming office, but not many are as widespread or headline-grabbing as those that beset the myriad mayors of the new SimCity. Almost immediately upon launching, the new Maxis-made, Electronic Arts?distributed game was beset with problems. Players overloaded the servers that the city-building game's always-connected design demands, EA declined to provide refunds to disgruntled customers but relented and promised to give each registered user a free catalog game, and then rumors arose that even those within the EA ranks were outraged at the way everything was handled. Though the worst of the problems were largely fixed by this past weekend, this was one of the rare releases that really seemed to push "there's no such thing as bad publicity" as its guiding philosophy.

With the smoke cleared and most of those woes behind us, it is finally time to judge SimCity by its worth as a game. And, sadly, it's not worth most of the trouble it's already endured. It is, above all else, the logical modern incarnation of the series that launched in 1989 and had its fourth (and most recent) official chapter ten years ago with SimCity 4?and that's not always a good thing. Although there are certainly moments when the classic fun and addictiveness bleed through, too many attempts have been made to make this a good SimCity game for today rather than simply a good SimCity game. As a result, the missed opportunities pile high enough to obscure the positives and prevent this from being an ideal purchase for all except the most patient and forgiving.

Ground Breaking (or Not)
Before you can make any other municipality-momentous decisions, you first must fixate your city within the larger, Internet-linked world it inhabits.? This means first entering a "game," or region:? You can either join one that already exists or create your own by choosing a map from among eight possibilities, each of which offers different physical features and a varying number of city sites (up to 16). Once you're in a game, you may claim one of those spots.? Some factors should guide your decision making, particularly the terrain and available natural resources, so you might need to do a bit of experimenting before you find your ideal location. Doing all this is a bit laborious, especially if you just want to get up and playing immediately, but it's a necessary first step now that cities no longer exist in isolation.

This change introduces some intriguing aspects to the game's mechanics.? Within a region, you can easily cooperate with mayors of other cities, either selling them your unused resources and capabilities (if, for example, you have more garbage trucks than you need to service your populace) or collaborating with them on "great works," large construction projects like solar farms, international airports, space centers, and arcologies that benefit everyone.? That's the kind of online component that, in theory, makes sense in this scenario.

But it also places significant restrictions on you as a player. We've already seen the flaws inherent in requiring a constantly active Internet connection to even log onto the game?one really would have expected EA to learn a lesson from the similar implosion Diablo III faced soon after its launch. There's also the question of sorely diminished city size (which we'll get to later). And, beyond that, the renunciation of SimCity as one of the longest-running and most impressive software ?electronic toys.? Because every structure you build or bulldoze, every deal you broker or refuse, or every tract of land you zone can have an impact on other players, you're no longer able to save and load your games. This obliterates the nature of experimentation and investigation that has always characterized the series, and forces you into a rigidly structured world that's always moving forward whether you want it to or not. This marks SimCity's inviolable transition from something you play to something you do?and it will have a significant impact on the fun some, maybe even many, buyers will derive from the game.

First Day in Office
Once you're actually ready to take your city?s reins, the action unfolds more or less as it always has: You face an empty parcel of land with only a pittance of a budget (50,000 units of the in-game currency, called simoleons) and a small selection of improvements you can make.? These include the traditional zone types (residential, commercial, and industrial); entry-level tools for dealing with water, power, and sewage; a few types of roads (from dirt to six-lane concrete affairs capable of supporting streetcars); and not much else.? It's from these humble beginnings that your next great urban center will theoretically spring.

You'll discover within your first few clicks that certain aspects of city construction have been enormously simplified.? Chief among them: You no longer have to place things like power lines or water pipes?the game just knows how to give every building, anywhere within your city boundaries, what it needs without your having to micromanage every cable or flange.? Though this alteration eliminates what could often be an early-game budget-buster, it also removes an often frustrating time sink that often prevented you from speedily getting to the meat of city management. This is one change we can definitely live with. The only connection you need to make involves laying a road from the freeway into your city so perspective residents will have a way to get there.

As always, the early stages of the game are beset by the typical problems of zoning plots of land and building the specific structures you need to occupy them, attracting residents, and then making sure you can pay to have enough places for them to live, work, and shop.? That 50,000-simoleon starter fund doesn't go far, and you'll probably run short on dough before your creation can even properly be classified as a hamlet.? But once you've built enough of the basics, the only other thing you need is patience: Assuming you have the homes, jobs, and roads they need, sims will move in, and your treasury will begin filling up.? That's when most of the fun, and the headaches, start.

2 Ohio teen football players found guilty of rape

Trent Mays, 17, enters court for the fourth day of his and co-defendent defendant 16-year-old Ma'lik Richmond 's trial on rape charges in juvenile court on Saturday, March 16, 2013 in Steubenville, Ohio. Mays and Richmond are accused of raping a 16-year-old West Virginia girl in August, 2012.

Keith Srakocic, Pool, Associated Press

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio ? Two members of the high school football team that is the pride of Steubenville were found guilty Sunday of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl in a case that bitterly divided the Rust Belt city and led to accusations of a cover-up to protect the community's athletes.

Steubenville High School students Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond were sentence to at least a year in juvenile jail, capping a case that came to light via a barrage of morning-after text messages, social media posts and online photos and video. Mays was sentenced to an additional year in jail on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to be served after his rape sentence is completed.

The two teens broke down in tears after the verdict was read and later apologized to the victim and to the community. Both were emotional as they spoke, and Richmond struggled at times to talk through his sobs.

Mays, 17, and Richmond, 16, were charged with digitally penetrating the West Virginia girl, first in the back seat of a moving car after an alcohol-fueled party on Aug. 11, and then in the basement of a house. They were ordered to avoid contact with the victim until they're 21.

The case roiled the community amid allegations that more students should have been charged and led to questions about the influence of the local football team, a source of a pride in a community of 18,000 that suffered massive job losses with the collapse of the steel industry. Their arms linked, protesters stood outside the courthouse Sunday morning awaiting the verdict, some wearing masks.

The trial opened last week as a contest between prosecutors determined to show the girl was so drunk she couldn't have been a willing participant that night, and defense attorneys soliciting testimony from witnesses that would indicate that the girl, though drunk, knew what she was doing.

The teenage girl testified Saturday that she could not recall what happened the night of the attack but remembered waking up naked in a strange house after drinking at a party. The girl said she recalled drinking, leaving the party holding hands with Mays and throwing up later. When she woke up, she said she discovered her phone, earrings, shoes, and underwear were missing, she testified.

"It was really scary," she said. "I honestly did not know what to think because I could not remember anything."

The girl said she believed she was assaulted when she later read text messages among friends and saw a photo of herself taken that night, along with a video that made fun of her and the alleged attack. She said she suspected she had been drugged because she couldn't explain being as intoxicated as defense witnesses have said she was.

"They treated her like a toy," said special prosecutor Marianne Hemmeter.

Evidence introduced at the trial included graphic text messages sent by numerous students after the night of the party, including by the accuser, containing provocative descriptions of sex acts and obscene language. Lawyers noted during the trial how texts have seemed to replace talking on the phone for contemporary teens. A computer forensic expert called by the state documented tens of thousands of texts found on 17 phones seized during the investigation.

The girl herself recalled being in a car later with Mays and Richmond and asking them what happened.

"They kept telling me I was a hassle and they took care of me," she testified. "I thought I could trust him (Mays) until I saw the pictures and video."

In questioning her account, defense attorneys went after her character and credibility. Two former friends of the girl testified that the accuser had a history of drinking heavily and was known to lie.

Alfred v2 brings Workflows, automates what Automator might not

Alfred v2 brings Workflows, automates what Automator might not

Anyone who's heavily invested in the Mac ecosystem knows Automator, a built-in tool that can string together multiple computing actions without having to know a lick of code. Some of us may want a little more power, or just a different variety of power -- which is where the recently launched Alfred 2.0 comes in. Those who buy the £15 ($23) Powerpack can take advantage of Workflows, which relies on an Automator-like concept of linking simple actions to run complicated tasks. They can be more ornate than you'd expect, however: for a start, you can run multiple app-specific tasks in parallel, such as telling Chrome to search YouTube, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes the moment you type in a movie keyword. It's equally possible to feed results back to Alfred, launch scripts and trigger notifications (whether Mountain Lion's or Growl's), among other feats. Should you demand control that sits just outside of Apple's boundaries, Alfred is waiting at the source link; anyone who just wants its core launcher functionality can grab the app for free.

Google's Niantic Labs Will Soon Launch An eBook Spin-Off Of Its Ingress AR Game

Ingress_LogoThis is a bit of an odd story: according to paidContent – and as first reported by to PublishersLunch – Google’s Niantic Labs, the somewhat mysterious division of Google that is home to Field Trip, the Niantic Project and Ingress, will soon start co-publishing a series of eBooks based on Ingress, its popular augmented reality game. A Google spokesperson confirmed to us that this report is indeed correct. The series, which according to PublishersLunch will be called ALIGNMENT, will be written and co-published with the help of Thomas Greanias and the first installment (ALIGNMENT: Ingress) will be published in April. The books are supposedly designed as prequels to Greanias’ Raising Atlantis series. It looks like Greanias has long been interested in the Ingress story and the overall theme of the game seems to fit in well with his earlier books. For Google, though, this – just like Ingress and most everything else that has come out of Niantic Labs – is a bit of a departure. The company isn’t exactly known for launching games and to then turn the game into a series of books is obviously new territory for Google, though Niantic Labs does seem to operate pretty independently from the rest of the company.

Breast cancer radiation raises risk of heart disease | MNN - Mother ...

Radiation treatments for breast cancer may increase the risk for heart disease later in life, a new study suggests.

?

In the study, the higher the level of radiation to the chest, the greater a women's risk of ischemic heart disease was within five years after therapy, the researchers said. Ischemic heart disease involves reduced blood supply to the heart. This increased risk continued for decades after the treatment.

?

However, for most women, the increase in risk was very small, said study researcher Sarah Darby, a professor of medical statistics at the University of Oxford in the England. For instance, for a 50-year-old women with no previous risk factors for heart disease, who received a radiation dose of 3 gray (Gy), her risk of dying from heart disease would increase just 0.5 percent, and her risk of experiencing an event like a heart attack would increase just 1 percent, over the next 30 years, the researchers said.

?

"Doctors will be able to reassure most women that the risk of heart disease from radiotherapy is small," Darby said.

?

But women at high risk for heart disease should speak with their doctors about the risks of starting radiation therapy for breast cancer, Darby said. Often, the therapy can be adjusted to lower the dose to the heart, Darby said.

?

Previous studies have linked breast cancer radiation therapy with an increased risk of heart disease. In the new study, the researchers tried to measure exactly how big this increase is for women with and without risk factors for heart disease.

?

Darby and colleagues analyzed information from 2,168 women living in Sweden and Denmark who underwent radiation therapy for breast cancer between 1958 and 2001.

?

During the study, 963 women had a cardiac event such as a heart attack or died from heart disease.

?

Radiation doses ranged from 0.03 Gy to 27.2 Gy, and the average dose was 4.9 Gy. For every 1-Gy increase in dose, the risk of a cardiac event increased by 7.6 percent, the researchers said. Women with a history of heart disease were more likely to experience a cardiac event than those without a history of heart disease.

?

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, who was not involved in the study, agreed with the findings, but said the study may have overestimated the risk of heart disease. That's because some women in the study may have been destined to have a heart attack or other heart problems whether or not they had therapy, because of underlying risk factors, Bernik said.

?

The type of breast cancer treatment women receive depends on the individual's case, Bernik said. Women who have a mastectomy may be able to avoid radiation treatment, but most women with breast cancer choose to have breast conserving surgery, Bernik said.

?

The study was published in the March 14 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. ?

Who's coming, going in NFL free-agent frenzy

By RICHARD ROSENBLATT

updated 3:56 p.m. ET March 16, 2013

The first week of NFL free agency isn't over yet, and it's already becoming difficult to keep track of who's coming and going.

Anquan Boldin's a 49er, Reggie Bush a Lion, Steven Jackson a Falcon, Greg Jennings a Viking and Wes Welker a Bronco.

Ryan Fitzpatrick's no longer a Bill, Dwight Freeney's out as a Colt, Mike Wallace as a Steeler and Nnamdi Asomugha as an Eagle.

That's just for starters.

Dozens of players have moved from one team to another in the past few weeks, from the days leading up to free agency and then during a feeding frenzy that began Tuesday ? when the free-agent season opened with a flourish.

Since the Ravens beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl last month (that was only last month?), NFL player moves are being made fast and furiously.

Ray Lewis and Matt Birk retired after helping the Ravens to a second Super Bowl title, high-salaried players were released by teams in a rush to get under the salary cap, and agents met with team executives trying work out new deals for their clients.

Some players have found new homes, others are still looking.

And then there's defensive end Elvis Dumervil, formerly of the Broncos. Because his contract paperwork did not reach team headquarters in time to beat a Friday deadline, he was released. For now, there's no telling where he'll end up.

Here's a team-by-team glance of notable players who have either arrived or departed from NFL teams through noon Saturday, knowing full well there will be many more additions and subtractions in the coming weeks.

Hungary: Snowstorm strands thousands in their cars

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) ? A snowstorm in Hungary brought drifts 10 feet (3 meters) high and violent gusts of wind, forcing thousands of people to spend the night in their cars or in emergency shelters after being stranded on a major highway.

Rescue officials said wind gusts up to 100 kph (62 mph) caused trucks to jackknife across the key M1 highway between Budapest and Vienna ? the capitals of Hungary and Austria ? leading to the traffic jams. On Friday, rescue workers cut across guardrails to let vehicles leave the jammed highway on makeshift side roads.

Over 100 people were injured in traffic and snow-related accidents, the Hungarian Disaster Management Agency said, adding that 5,700 cars were stranded on the roads and 18 trains were stuck between stations.

Snowdrifts up to 3 meters (10 feet) high and the violent gusts of wind brought many major roads across the country to a standstill. The storm also left more than 100,000 people without electricity.

More than 8,000 people had to take refuge in heated buildings set up by the disaster agency for stranded travelers.

Interior Minister Sandor Pinter said police and rescue units were called in, along with military vehicles with caterpillar treads.

The weather prompted the government and several opposition parties to cancel outdoor festivities for Friday's national holiday commemorating Hungary's 1848 revolution against the Habsburgs.

In neighboring Serbia and south across Montenegro, melting snow caused rivers to burst their banks and flood some villages.

In Slovakia, just north of Hungary, some schools in the eastern part of the country were closed because of heavy snowfall, and the Cunovo-Rajka border crossing between the two countries was closed to trucks. Slovakia also banned trucks going from the Czech Republic to Hungary through its territory. Around 20,000 households were without electricity in eastern Slovakia after high winds damaged the grid.

About 300 Slovak soldiers were deployed to help authorities cope.

To the south in Kosovo, authorities said an 8-year old girl drowned when a river burst its banks and swept her downriver. Heavy rains caused flooding that stranded dozens of people and prompted emergency rescues.

Casino Update | Councillor Pam McConnell

As you have likely heard, the City Manager?s report on a proposal for a Toronto casino has been delayed. We had anticipated the report to be issued this week, in advance of the Executive Committee meeting on March 20, and consideration by Council at the beginning of April.

The reason offered for the delay is to receive more information from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). While I firmly believe that elected representatives and the public should have as much information as possible before making important decisions, I am sceptical about this delay.

Let us not lose sight of the fact that the OLG?s mission - repeated in their media interviews, their website, and other forms of communication - is to establish a casino in the GTA and to generate more revenue from increased gambling. Because of this objective, their assessment and forecasts are heavily biased in favour of a casino. For example, their projections on the amount the City would receive in hosting fees continue to drop, yet they insist on publicly presenting this as one of the prime incentives in order to fulfill their agenda. As I have previously said, this casino is not about bringing new funds to the city but to increase revenues for the OLG and the province.

The OLG have also embarked on an aggressive media and marketing campaign that is dedicated to benefiting private casino operators to the detriment of our communities. It is truly disappointing that a government agency would exhibit so little regard for the public good.

Meanwhile, various casino operators are stepping up their efforts to lobby and persuade councillors and the public - through large ads in our largest newspapers, through private briefings with elected representatives, through downplaying the casino with terms like ?entertainment facility? and ?integrated resort?. Like the OLG?s own marketing and communications campaign, the promises of the number of jobs, the wages, the number of tourists, and revenues and amenities to the city and residents do not bear scrutiny and are out of step with experiences in other jurisdictions. In fact, similar promises and predictions were made for the Revel resort in Atlantic City, which opened last April and has just filed for bankruptcy protection.

I would like to assure residents of our community that I have not met with casino operators, and I have no intention of meeting with any in the future. My position on a casino in Toronto has remained unchanged: a casino would be bad for our city and I cannot support it.

Residents who have called and written to me are overwhelmingly opposed to a casino. While I am appreciative of the support and am confident that I am representing our community?s position, I am asking you to reach out to your friends, family, and co-workers who live in other parts of the city. Talk to them about the type of city you want to live in and why a casino does not fit into the goal of a safe, beautiful, and prosperous Toronto. Ask them to sign the on-line petition at nocasinotoronto.com and to contact their local Councillors.

I truly believe that the voices from Torontonians should - and do - have more influence than rosy artist renditions, aggressive lobbyists, and hollow promises. Together we will continue to build a city we can all be proud of.
