Rugby offers opportunity for everyone to play - Waterloo SportsXpress

Submitted by the Waterloo County Rugby Club

Looking to find a fun, innovative way to get kids more active and off the couch in their free time? Do you want something different for your children?s recreation activities? Want to play the newest Olympic sport? Try playing rugby. Don?t know anything about rugby? Not to worry, we will teach you.

Rugby is very different from many traditional sports and provides a great social community for players of all shapes, sizes, experiences and abilities. The culture of respect for your teammates and opponents runs deep in the sport and all of our players achieve physical fitness levels far beyond their initial expectations.

Waterloo County Rugby Club (WCRC) runs full programming for boys and girls ages four and up. Over 100 boys and girls, ages 18 and under, practice on Monday nights while games are on Wednesdays or Saturdays. The program starts May 1st and ends in August, but anyone is free to join at anytime. We have been hearing from many parents that, ?Yes, my son/daughter is very interested in rugby, but they play soccer and baseball, etc and cannot afford the time to play full time.?

However, Waterloo County Rugby is not a huge time commitment and is often played while participating in other sports. Other parents say they feel that rugby is dangerous and causes injuries like concussions because rugby players don?t wear any equipment. Facts however, prove that concussions are more prevalent in football and hockey where players wear hard plastic equipment and play on hard surfaces; both factors contributing to increase injuries. Our minor program is non-contact until the age of 12 at which point modified contact is introduced and full contact starts at 14.

In 2013, we would love to start a Cambridge site for our minor program. Cambridge is full of great athletes and many children who are looking for fun activities and team sports. We run practices in Waterloo and play games in Kitchener, but really want to start a program in the Cambridge area. Next spring we will run practices on Monday nights in Riverside Park in Cambridge and then combine to play games with the Kitchener/Waterloo program. Getting this Cambridge program started will require support from the community and parents. Anyone willing to help us grow the program is welcome to join us.

On September 29th, WCRC will be participating in Sports Day in Canada. We will be hosting ?try-rugby? events at Lion?s park in Kitchener, RIM Park in Waterloo and Galt Colligate Institute. These events offer a perfect chance for kids to get out and learn a bit about rugby and see what all the fun is about. This day is non-contact and nothing is required ? simply show up. More details are online at Waterloocountyrugby.com

WCRC also has players aged 19 and up with some into their 40s. Men and women can both play the game at various levels of Provincial and Regional competition. Our senior men have four teams and the senior women have two, both competitive and some more social in nature. Our total club membership is in excess of 250 players and we always welcome new members. The women had an exceptional season last year, making it all the way to the Provincial Championship but fell short in the final. The women are strong athletes and almost have enough players for a third team. The men?s season is continuing into the fall and wraps up with the playoffs in October.

During Oktoberfest, WCRC is getting into the spirit of Gemutlichkeit and hosting the Annual Oktoberfest 10s Classic Rugby Tournament. On October 6th, teams from across the province, as well as Quebec and the US, will converge on Waterloo Region to vie for rugby supremacy while taking part in the Oktoberfest activities visiting some Festhallen as part of the tournament. Come out to Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo on October 6th to see fast-paced men?s and women?s rugby action. To register a team, find more details on our web site ? waterloocountyrugby.com

This winter, Waterloo County Rugby is running a non-contact indoor rugby league for boys and girls as well as a co-ed adult social league. This is a perfect chance for someone who hasn?t played in a number of years or wants to learn to come out, join up with a team and make some new friends while learning rugby. If you don?t have a team, don?t worry ? you can register and join a team. Games are played at CORE Recreation Complex on New Dundee Road on Saturdays starting November 1st running through winter to the end of March. Register now and save on registration.
